Welcome back!

I hope you've all had a pleasant Christmas, a happy new year and tolerable collections. There's a lot to look forward to this term: Learn to Code, tech talks with TPP, Ensoft, Metaswitch and CoreFiling; and another fun pub quiz with TPP.

First up this term is Gold sponsor TPP's talk about Digital Technology and Personalised Medicine. They'll explore technology that will save lives, empower patients and make clinicians more efficient. TPP is familiar with this: its software manages almost 50 million patient records for the NHS and has over 200,000 users.

In Week 2, we have the launch of Learn to Code. If you're an absolute beginner and want to learn how to code, come to Learn to Code. We'll be teaching Python, one of the world's most popular programming languages and the perfect place to start coding. The first session has been extremely popular, so make sure to arrive early! This year's Learn to Code is being generously sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect and TPP and Silver sponsor Ensoft. Join the Learn to Code Facebook group to get updates.

If you already know how to program, we greatly appreciate any time you can spare to help out at our session. Join the Learn to Code Helpers Facebook group to get more info.

Thinking about your future? Gold sponsor TPP are seeking bright graduates for the Technical Operations team and Barclays are offering full-time analyst, summer internship and spring week opportunities.

The Oxford Foundry have also released their Hilary termcard.

Have a great week,

Edward and the rest of the committee

Events

TPP Tech Talk: "Digital Technology & Personalised Medicine"

19:00, Wednesday, Week 1, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer Science

TPP will be in Lecture Theatre A in the Department of Computer Science, Wolfson Building on Wednesday 16th January from 7 pm until 9 pm.

Free pizza and soft drinks will be provided for all attendees!

This talk will be an exploration of the changing landscape of digitally enhanced patient care. We’ll assess how future developments will improve outcomes for patients and clinicians, taking a look at some of the recent exciting developments that enable us to tailor medical decisions, interventions and treatments to individuals. From early diagnosis to empowering patients to take control of their own health, medical technology holds the power to improve healthcare and save lives.

TPP provides software to the NHS to join up patient records from any care setting to make healthcare delivery more effective and efficient. Over 200,000 users in 7,000 NHS organisations use TPP's SystmOne software to access almost 50 million patient records. TPP provides the technology to enable our National Health Service to be the world-leading care organisation in the 21st century, and aspires to do the same globally. In 2018 TPP was named by the JobCrowd as the Top Company for Graduates to Work for.

Geek Night 1: Project Euler

19:00, Saturday, Week 1, UGSA, Department of Computer Science

Bring your laptop for an evening of relaxing, chatting, games, coding and a selection of food and drink.

This week's theme is Project Euler, where we'll have a competition to see who can solve the most Project Euler problems.

Learn to Code 1: Getting started with Python

19:00, Friday, Week 2, Lecture Theatres A and B, Department of Computer Science

Learn to Code is back! If you've ever wanted to learn the basics of programming, refresh your Python knowledge, or get an idea of what computer scientists actually do all day then this is going to be a great course for you 😃.

We aren't going to assume any prior programming experience, although to get the best out of the sessions we highly recommend that you bring a laptop so that you can follow along with some of the examples. It doesn't matter whether you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, and in the first session we'll explain how to get started on any of these platforms.

In this course we are going to be using the programming language Python, which is one of the easiest languages to pick up if you've never programmed before. It is widely used in the technology industry – YouTube, NASA, and Wikipedia are just three examples. If you need to learn R at some point during your degree, you may find that an introduction to Python will help you pick up basic computational thinking ideas faster.

We do expect demand to be very high for this course, so please try to arrive before the advertised start time as we need to register everyone (for fire regulations). You'll need to enter via the back door on Parks Road; there are CompSoc signs up at the department. The course is open to all members of the University of Oxford.

If you're a CS student with a little spare time and enthusiasm, please consider volunteering by contacting the committee.

Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect and TPP and Silver sponsor Ensoft.
