6th Week

Trinity Term Week 4 Newsletter

STEM Social, Cocktail Making Night and TikTok!

Warmest Welcome, Computer Aficionado,

My calendar reliably informs me that it's Fourth Week, so it's time for yet another weekly newsletter! We've got two exciting events coming up this week... and a new social media account?

If you were lucky enough to nab a ticket in time, we have our cocktail making night at the Alchemist coming up tonight! A reminder is below.

If you missed out on the cocktail making night, fear not! Tickets have gone live for our STEM social at the Varsity Club this Friday! As of the time of writing, tickets are still available, so if you fancy a night of drinks and scintillating conversation, look below for the event link!

And to round it all off, we now have a TikTok account! Follow us at @ox.compsoc.net for some fun CompSoc videos — we already have two up, with more on the way!

Fun Computing Fact: If I say the word 'semaphore', what comes to mind? A neat little concurrency primitive? Well, today's fun fact concerns the rather older type of semaphore — the ones where moving physical parts are used as long-distance visual signals. If you think that's a horribly antiquated technology with no use in the modern world besides railways... well, you'd be right, but that didn't stop the Internet Engineering Task Force from writing RFC 4824 in 2007. Otherwise known as the Semaphore Flag Signalling System, RFC 4824 describes a proposed method to transmit Internet Protocol (IP) packets over semaphore. Somehow, I'm not sure it'll catch on...

Make sure to join OxWoCS (Oxford Women in CS), a society we're working closely with, if you identify as a woman or woman-adjacent person in CS! They have a host of wonderful events on, including talks, panels and socials. Computer Science is unfortunately a subject with one of the biggest gender gaps in Oxford and worldwide, and addressing this is at the core of OxWoCS.
