Penultimate greetings CompSoc,

Coming up tomorrow night is our fabtastic Film Night! Details below.

The committee elections at the AGM are on Wednesday.

This means that this is the last email I'm officially sending as Secretary. It's been a sick ride, yo!

Our final Learn to Code session runs on Thursday of Week 7. Then we have the return of the glorious and extravagant LAN Night, and a tech talk in Week 8 by Metaswitch, which will thus conclude our events for the term!

The deadline for Silver sponsor Ensoft's graduate positions is fast approaching. Just send a CV to apply.

Penultimate sincerity,

Joe G and the rest of the committee

Annual General Meeting

19:00, Wednesday, Week 7, UGSA, Department of Computer Science

Democracy hype! As the new term passes, the society turns over a new leaf. The 2019–2020 CompSoc executive committee is about to get elected. If you're interested in all that but would like more information on what our roles are, drop us an email and we'll explain everything you want to know. If you'd like to introduce more, non-executive roles, please send us an email so we can add it to the agenda.

This year will likely see a committee where nobody on committee was on previously - a full replacement. As we're replaced, we shall serve as mentors. We've written handover docs to make the transition somewhat easier.

We'll also be voting on approving the minutes of meetings from the previous TGM, and any other things people propose to the agenda. If there's anything you'd like to see on the minutes, send it our way.

There will also be the usual committee reports and pizza.

The official agenda is attached. If you want to submit any other motions, email us to add them to the agenda.

Ensoft CV deadline (Midnight Sun 3rd Mar, 8th Week) - Software Development Careers

Ensoft develops software that connects the world. The Internet depends every day on the code we write - it's challenging work that matters. It’s also fun - excelling at writing complex software is what we enjoy.

We've grown by taking a few of the best Oxbridge graduates each year, and investing heavily in their training. It's an ideal environment for bright, creative people who want to develop rapidly. If you bring the computer science knowledge and coding skills needed to tame Internet-scale complex systems, you can solve challenging problems as part of a world-class software engineering team.

This term we are recruiting for graduates.

Our application process is very simple:

You can find more details here, or get reminders by following us on Twitter or on Facebook. But I would encourage you to apply soon. Whilst everything is designed to take up as little of your time as we can, it is still very competitive for places.

From PhD to Startup: Oxford

17:30, Monday, 8th Week, Oxford Foundry

Doing a PhD or Masters in a technical subject and want to make an impact, but don't know where to start?

Learn more about the route from academic research to launching your own startup from founders who have been exactly where you are.

From PhD to Startup: Oxford is an event run each term by Entrepreneur First and the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division at Oxford University.

This time we will be joined by Basilio Gentile, the co-founder and CTO of Circuit Mind. Circuit Mind is completely automating the design of electronic circuit boards. Circuit boards are integral to products we use everyday - from our smartphones to our televisions and microwaves. But no two boards are the same. Each one is designed to exact specifications that meet the requirements of devices, which mean they take a huge amount of time and skill to create. In fact, every year £40bn and 1.5bn hours are spent globally in tedious and repetitive circuit board design work. Circuit Mind plans to change that. Basilio is building complex algorithms that take in the requirements for a circuit board and outputs the circuit board final design, ready for manufacture. This means better circuits, designed orders of magnitude faster, at a fraction of the cost.

Before starting this company, Basilio completed a Masters in Control Systems Engineering, a Masters in Mathematical Modelling and Computation and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich. His mastery of high-performance mathematical algorithms for complex systems is what sits at the core of Circuit Mind’s solution. He turned down postdocs at Harvard and Berkeley to join Entrepreneur First, where he met his co-founder Tomide and they created Circuit Mind.

Join us to hear more about Basilio's research and journey. Please arrive no later than 5.30pm.

Pizza and beer are, of course, on us.
