Termly General Meeting!

Hello, Kindly Traveller,

Welcome to Seventh Week... okay, it's a bit late in the week to say that. Apologies. As the elders amongst us hurtle towards the ever-wonderful end of exams and the freshers prepare for the turbid waters of prelims, my job is but to inform you of our final major event of Trinity Term — the Termly General Meeting!

Held every term, the TGM is your chance to influence CompSoc's policies, by-laws and regulations. Any member can submit a motion for consideration — all you have to do is join our Discord server. If the tedium of bureaucracy doesn't interest you, we'll end the term as we started after with pizza and board games. Details are below.

— Declan, CompSoc Secretary

Fun Computing Fact: If you sat the Computer Architecture exam this week, you're probably (hopefully) familiar with Intel's x86 instruction set — it's the one used in all your desktop processors. What you probably don't know is that the architecture is so complex that even the simple mov instruction is Turing complete! With some clever usage of addressing modes and processor faults, the M/o/Vfuscator project can compile C code to binaries using only mov. You can even compile (a very slow version of) Doom!

Still not a member? How?! Membership only costs £1 for LIFE, with tons of benefits - discounts on merch and tickets, free food at all socials, our exclusive Discord server and more - so it's definitely worth signing up!

Termly General Meeting — Trinity Term 2024

It's almost the end of the term, and it's time for us to consider your suggestions for the future of CompSoc! Come along to our Termly General Meeting this Saturday, where all members can vote on your motions! You'll also hear from our Committee members on what they've been doing this term and what we plan to do for the future.

After all that tiresome bureaucracy, we'll close out the term in true CompSoc style with pizza and board games. Make sure to come along to catch up with friends and relax for one last time before the end of the academic year!

If you'd like to submit your own motions, you'll have to be a member! Motions can be submitted in our Discord server, which you can join with the following link: https://discord.com/invite/cUZFPG5WZ6. Please submit all motions by 11:59 pmon Friday 7th June.

Please note that the TGM is at 7pm. Not 8pm. Don't believe the lies of the termcard.

When: 7pm, Saturday 8th June

Where: Undergraduate Social Area, Department of Computer Science 7 Parks Rd, Oxford OX1 3QG

Make sure to join OxWoCS (Oxford Women in CS), a society we're working closely with, if you identify as a woman or woman-adjacent person in CS! They have a host of wonderful events on, including talks, panels and socials. Computer Science is unfortunately a subject with one of the biggest gender gaps in Oxford and worldwide, and addressing this is at the core of OxWoCS.
