Hey everyone,

Our next social event this term is Social Competitive Programming! We’ll be setting some programming challenges for you to complete, and you’ll be competing against your fellow members to come out on top! We also have a tech talk from CoreFiling this Wednesday titled “Security in the real world: The easiest programming requirement to forget”, see below for more details. This week also marks the return of Learn To Code! Whether you’d like to learn programming or think you could help others learn, it’s a great opportunity! We’ve also got messages from Jane Street and Citadel this week so check them out below.

If you aren’t already on the CompSoc Discord, you can join it here to take part in social events and keep in touch with other members.

Events

Social Competitive Programming

19:00, Saturday, Week 2, Discord

Our third social of the term will be a chance for some “competitive” programming. In reality, there is no particular pressure, but there will be a whole bunch of challenges available to complete. Try to complete as many as you can, and help each other out if anyone needs help with some of the challenges.

CoreFiling Tech Talk - Security in the real world

18:30, Wednesday, Week 2, Zoom

For our first talk of the term, our sponsor Corefiling is hosting a talk on security for software, so come and join us on zoom to learn more about it!

Learn To Code

19:00, Thursday, Week 2, Zoom

Learn to Code is back! If you want to learn how to write code or refresh your knowledge, this course will teach introductory programming in the Python language with no prior experience necessary. Programming is a useful skill in a range of subjects and having some knowledge of it is a great way to improve your CV. Alternatively, if you’re already a CS student and would like to volunteer to help teach others some introductory Python, please contact the committee (replying to this email is fine) and we’ll get you connected!

Jane Street

Jane Street invites you to apply to our summer 2021 FPGA engineer internship!

About the Position

We’re big believers in the ability of tools to make programming faster, more pleasant, and more reliable. We think the same is true for hardware design, and we’re looking for people with experience in hardware design who are interested in using programming language technology to improve the process of designing, testing and validating hardware designs.

Your intern projects will predominantly involve OCaml & Hardcaml, for both RTL design and testing/integration.

If you’d like to get an idea how we design and test our FPGAs and how the process of designing hardware can be improved by applying lessons from software engineering check out our OCaml All The Way Down talk and Programmable Hardware podcast episode.

About You

The role involves building FPGA applications from concept to a working design. You will:

We don’t expect you to have experience with functional programming, OCaml, or finance; we’re happy to hire talented engineers who are excited to approach hardware design with a software engineering mindset and teach them what they need to know.

Please note that while we’re working remotely right now, we’re hoping to to host our 2021 internships back in the London office if public health conditions allow.
