Hello again again again!!
Oh wow! Everything looks so cosmic!
Coming up, we have a tech talk from HSBC about Agile, which we’re co-hosting with Oxford Guild. Learn to Code’s advancing to learning about structures for dealing with sets of data, and another TPP pub quiz is just a couple of weeks away!
The Reading University Hackathon society (“R. U. Hacking?”) is running a hackathon in a couple of weeks, do check them out!
Details for all these events are below.
Did I mention we have a Discord? I wonder if anyone isn’t on it yet ;)
Triple peace,
Joe G and the rest of the committee
19:00, Saturday, Week 3, UGSA, Department of Computer Science
Heya all! Geek Night 3’s going to be about taking some language you’ve never used before! The challenge is to see if you can write a Brainfuck interpreter. If you’re feeling particularly daring, you could try interpreting some other language either.
Bring your laptops, we’ll provide the pizza ;)
19:00, Wednesday, Week 4, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer Science
Meet Gez Smith, HSBC’s Global Head of Agile. Agile is the modern approach to software development, emphasising customer satisfaction, quality and developer self-organisation. HSBC transferred its development teams to Agile in 2016 and – combined with fresh investment – has since seen dramatic improvements in efficiency, productivity and service availability.
Gez has over 13 years experience in agile and Scrum and is a regular speaker at conferences and user group meet ups in the UK and abroad. He loves to meet new people and talk agile.
This talk will be of interest to anybody interested in project management (such as 2nd year CS projects 😉), HSBC’s tech culture and, of course, HSBC’s many opportunities in tech, from developers to business management.
Free pizza and drinks will be provided after the talk.
19:00, Thursday, Week 4, Lecture Theatres A and B, Department of Computer Science
Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect and TPP, Silver sponsor Ensoft and bronze sponsor HSBC.
This session will be on compound data structures: mostly lists, and also sets, tuples and dictionaries.

An evening of coding and fun.
If you’ve a good idea for a theme, please send it our way!
Bring your laptops, we’ll provide the pizza.
19:00, Wednesday, Week 5, Royal Oak, Woodstock Road
TPP is excited to announce a Coding Challenge on Wednesday 13th February, in collaboration with the Oxford Computer Society!
Unlike a typical pub quiz, you’ll need to exercise your problem solving skills to tackle the range of challenges set instead of applying your general knowledge.
There will be free food and drinks, both soft and alcoholic, available for attendees throughout the whole event. There will also be great prizes on offer for the winning teams (Raspberry Pis and a Hotel Chocolat hamper).
We recommend teams of about 5-6 people, but smaller groups are welcome too, and if you’re unsure who to come with then we’ll be happy to match you up with other keen problem solvers on the day.
Tickets are already fully allocated, so if you can’t make it then please free up your slot as soon as you know for those on the waiting list.
19:00, Thursday, Week 5, Lecture Theatres A and B, Department of Computer Science
Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect and TPP, Silver sponsor Ensoft and bronze sponsor HSBC.
This session will cover functions and modules, which we can use to avoid having to repeat code all the time, and allow us to pool several files into one respectively.
The Oxbridge Women in Computer Science Conference is an annual conference that brings together junior and senior computer scientists to encourage collaboration through formal and informal discussion and provides a perfect opportunity for young researchers to present their research and get valuable feedback in an open, friendly and informal environment.
The conference is free to attend for computer scientists at all UK universities and this year will be held on 9th March 2019, at University of Oxford. It will include talks by key speakers from industry and academia who will share their experiences with the participants.
Important Dates and Information:
To attend the conference, please register here. There is no registration fee for the conference, and lunch and a conference dinner will be provided free of charge. The deadline for registration is 25th February 2019.
Current female undergraduate, MPhil/MSc, PhD/DPhil students, RAs and PostDocs are encouraged to submit short abstracts (up to 1 page) for presentations or posters on their topic of research.
Presentations will be 10 minutes long, followed by 3 minutes questions and discussion. Posters can be up to size A1.
