Hey everyone,

Our next event this term is a virtual movie night! This will take place over netflix so be sure to let a committee member know if you don’t have an account so we can set you up with a temporary one. Board game night last week went well, it was great to see everyone’s drawing skills! We also have messages today from Jane Street, The Invariants and our new partner Oxford Digithon, so be sure to check those out below.

If you aren’t already on the CompSoc Discord, you can join it here to take part in events and keep in touch with other members.

See you on Saturday,

- Matthew and the rest of the committee

Call for Articles: Invariant Magazine 2020

The Invariants are relaunching The Invariant, Oxford’s student mathematics magazine. We welcome the submission of articles for the next issue, due to be published in Michaelmas 2020. Submissions are accepted from any member of the university, and we especially welcome submissions from undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Submission guidelines

Submissions can take almost any form, including technical expositions, thought pieces, essays, case studies and literature reviews. We are keen to see as wide a range of topics as possible. Articles which include figures and images are especially encouraged!

Submitted articles should be at least 800 words in length. The deadline for proposals is July 25, 2020. Completed articles will be due by August 25, 2020.

Queries

If you’re interested in contributing but are unsure if it’s the right thing for you, please get in touch! It’s our goal to make mathematical journalism as accessible and as fun as possible for everyone involved, and we’d be very happy to work with you to create a proposal.

We can be reached at magazine@invariants.org.uk.

Jane Street

Jane Street invites you to apply to our autumn software engineering internship!

About the Position

We are big believers in functional programming, using OCaml, a statically-typed functional programming language, as our primary development language. We also believe in the value of open source software, using it in our daily work and releasing hundreds of thousands of lines of our own code as open source.

About You

We don’t expect you to have experience with functional programming, OCaml, or finance; we’re happy to hire talented engineers and teach them what they need to know.

If you’d like to get an idea of what we cover in our software engineering interview process, you can read this blog post, and to get an idea of projects software engineering interns work on you can read this post highlighting a few of our Summer 2019 projects.

We hope to host this internship in our new London office. However, both our employees’ and interns’ safety and well-being are our main priority, and we may move this to a remote internship nearer the time. This internship is intended for those based in Europe and the UK.
