Michaelmas Term Week 6 Newsletter

Computer Vision Talk, Learn to Code and More!

Guten Tag, Learned Member,

As the term eternally rumbles on, we're back in Week 6 with a new slate of events! Hopefully some of you were lucky enough to sign up for our socials earlier this week at Taylors and the Alchemist – if not, we have more events to come!

On Thursday, we'll be in the Department's Lecture Theatre B at 5pmfor a talk on computer vision from Dr. Hansung Kim which promises to be insightful!

On Saturday, we have our familiar dynamic duo of events – at 5:30pm, we'll be in Jesus College's E-sports Suite for the fifth session of our Learn to Code series, and at 7pm we'll be in the Undergraduate Social Area as always for our well-known Saturday Social with some much-needed pizza.

As we close out the week on Sunday, we'll be back in the UGSA yet again for our sixth Competitive Programming session of the term – come along to get some practice in with friends!

Finally, we're now accepting motions from members for our Termly General Meeting in Week 7! If you'll be around next Friday to propose a motion and you want to shape the future of CompSoc, make sure to join our Discord server and post your motion there!

Fun Computing Fact: You may by now be familiar with Bluesky, a decentralised Twitter replacement which has been rapidly growing since the US election earlier this month. Interestingly, however, distributed social media sites predate both Bluesky and its closest competitor, Mastodon, by several years!

Along with sharing characteristics of other distributed networks like email and Usenet, one of the first decentralised social networks was Diaspora – a Facebook competitor created in 2010 by students at New York University's mathematical sciences institute. Much like the Personal Data Servers of Bluesky's AT Protocol and the ActivityPub instances which form Mastodon, the Diaspora network consists of separately maintained federated pods which store user data and content.

Still not a member? How?! Membership only costs £1 for LIFE, with tons of benefits - discounts on merch and tickets, free food at all socials, our exclusive Discord server and more - so it's definitely worth signing up!

Check Out OxWoCS!

Make sure to join OxWoCS (Oxford Women in CS), a society we're working closely with, if you identify as a woman or woman-adjacent person in CS! They have a host of wonderful events on, including talks, panels and socials. Computer Science is unfortunately a subject with one of the biggest gender gaps in Oxford and worldwide, and addressing this is at the core of OxWoCS.
