Hey everyone,

If you are a fresher, welcome to Oxford, and otherwise, welcome back! We’d like to invite you all to our first event of the term – our freshers’ welcome night! This will be a great opportunity for freshers and other prospective members to get to know the rest of the society and meet the committee, but also for current members to see each other again and meet the newcomers. We will also go over how to officially become a member, so don’t worry if you aren’t a member yet! Everyone is welcome.

For those new to the society, our committee is composed of five members:

You are welcome to contact us with any queries via email at committee@ox.compsoc.net. You are also welcome to reply to this email if you prefer.

A few helpful links:

Every Saturday, we will be running a social event, and on Wednesdays we run tech talks from our sponsors. This term we will be running all of these events virtually. Unless otherwise specified, Zoom will be the platform of choice, so we’ll email out the meeting links prior to the event.

We have this term’s first virtual tech talk from Optiver next Wednesday, more info on that in next week’s newsletter. We also have sponsor messages from Bloomberg and Citadel so be sure to check those out below.

We will be emailing out the term card listing our upcoming events in next week’s newsletter. We’ll also be announcing our tech talks, social events and any sponsor notices through this newsletter and through Facebook. We’ve prepared a great selection of events for this term so stay tuned!

- Matthew and the rest of the committee

Bloomberg Masterclass: A New Era Of Python Parsing

The Parser was one of the first pieces that were created for Python and it has served very efficiently for many years; but implementing new rules in the language syntax is becoming more difficult or even impossible in some cases. In this talk, we will explain the problems with the old parser, how the new parser works, what are its benefits, and what to expect from the Python grammar in the future.
