Problem Sheet and Panic, Learn to Code and More!

Hiya, Trusted Recipient,

We're back once more for Week 5! We have a quieter week in store, before a flurry of talks and socials planned for next week.

On Saturday at 5:30pm, we'll be back in Jesus College's E-sports Suite for the fourth session in our Learn to Code series, where we'll be covering loops.

If Learn to Code drives you loopy, we'll be in the Undergraduate Social Area also on Saturday at 7pm with our Problem Sheet and Panic session. Whether you have work to finish or you just want to grab some pizza, make sure to come along and hang out for a relaxed evening!

Finally, we'll be back in the trusty Undergraduate Social Area one more time on Sunday at 1:30pm for our enduring Competitive Programming bootcamp. Come along and practice your skills with friends!

Fun Computing Fact: Are you familiar with relational databases? If so, you may be interested to hear about Microsoft's attempt to model a computer's file system as a relational database! Windows Future Storage (WinFS for short) allowed programs to query the file system based on a file's metadata and for pieces of data on the volume to be linked by relationships.

WinFS was born from the Object File System which was part of Microsoft's ill-fated Cairo project for Windows in the 90s. It later became part of Windows Codename Longhorn, which went through a long and troubled development process from 2001 until its release as Windows Vista in 2006. Despite two beta versions of WinFS for Windows XP releasing in the intervening period, WinFS was axed for the final product, with only small individual components making their way into Vista.
