Fun Computing Fact: (Special thanks to member Oliver Geer for telling me this :) )
It's probably well-known that UNIX is designed with the "everything is a file" approach. What if instead of having the entire filesystem sit on one device, we use a
network of devices as a filesystem?
The Plan 9 from Bell Labs operating system implements the "everything is a file" (e.g. windows,
network connections) approach on distributed file systems with the 9P network protocol. The protocol is even used for WSL since Windows 10! Sadly, official development of the OS has stopped, though forks and extensions such as 9front as well as descendants
such as Inferno exist.

Marshall Wace Event Sign-up
|
|
Marshall Wace is coming to campus on Tuesday 3rd November and would love to meet you!
Join MW engineers for a hands-on systems design workshop, where we’ll walk through a real problem we’ve faced at Marshall Wace and the technology, we used
to solve it. After an introduction to the problem and requirements, you’ll break into small groups to design your own solution, working closely with our engineers to iterate, challenge, and refine your approach. Each group will then present their design, walk
through key decisions, and receive live feedback, with exciting prizes up for grabs for the winning team.
You’ll also have the chance to learn more about our Technology Intern and Graduate opportunities, meet the team, and hear from the recruiters involved in
the process. There will be networking opportunities throughout, and food and drinks will be provided. Spaces are limited, so please apply to be considered for a place at the event.
Selected attendees will receive a confirmation email at least 3 days before the event with all relevant event details. Apply below to register your interest
- we hope to see you there!
Date: Tuesday 3rd November
Time: TBA (but expect it to start around 6-6:30pm and last 2 hours)

OxWoCS (Oxford Women in CS), a society we're working closely with, if you identify as a
woman or woman-adjacent person in CS! They have a host of wonderful events on, including talks, panels and socials. Computer Science is unfortunately a subject with one of the biggest gender gaps in Oxford and worldwide, and addressing this is
at the core of OxWoCS.
