Tech talk with CoreFiling: IPv6: are we there yet?

19:00, Wednesday, Week 3, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer Science

CompSoc sysadmins of the early 21st century, David North and Stephen White, will talk about IPv6: now that we've "run out" of IPv4 addresses, how is adoption of the new version going? Are businesses, academia and residential users queuing up to embrace the future? Or were the predictions of problems wildly over-hyped and we're all getting along fine as we are?

Pizza will be provided after the talk.

Learn to Code 2: Control structures

19:00, Thursday, Week 3, Lecture Theatres A and B, Department of Computer Science

Learn to Code is back! If you've ever wanted to learn the basics of programming, refresh your Python knowledge, or get an idea of what computer scientists actually do all day then this is going to be a great course for you 😃.

We aren't going to assume any prior programming experience, although to get the best out of the sessions we highly recommend that you bring a laptop so that you can follow along with some of the examples. It doesn't matter whether you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, and in the first session we'll explain how to get started on any of these platforms.

In this course we are going to be using the programming language Python, which is one of the easiest languages to pick up if you've never programmed before. It is widely used in the technology industry – YouTube, NASA, and Wikipedia are just three examples. If you need to learn R at some point during your degree, you may find that an introduction to Python will help you pick up basic computational thinking ideas faster.

We do expect demand to be very high for this course, so please try to arrive before the advertised start time as we need to register everyone (for fire regulations). You'll need to enter via the back door on Parks Road; there are CompSoc signs up at the department. The course is open to all members of the University of Oxford.

If you're a CS student with a little spare time and enthusiasm, please consider volunteering by contacting the committee.

Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect and TPP, Silver sponsor Ensoft and bronze sponsor HSBC.

This week's session will cover how to make your code make decisions, and explain some ways to make loops.

Geek Night 3: Write in a language you haven't used!

19:00, Saturday, Week 3, UGSA, Department of Computer Science

Heya all! Geek Night 3's going to be about taking some language you've never used before! The challenge is to see if you can write a Brainfuck interpreter. If you're feeling particularly daring, you could try interpreting some other language either.

Bring your laptops, we'll provide the pizza ;)

Tech talk with HSBC: Agile approach in technology

19:00, Wednesday, Week 4, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer Science

Meet Gez Smith, HSBC's Global Head of Agile. Agile is the modern approach to software development, emphasising customer satisfaction, quality and developer self-organisation. HSBC transferred its development teams to Agile in 2016 and – combined with fresh investment – has since seen dramatic improvements in efficiency, productivity and service availability.

Gez has over 13 years experience in agile and Scrum and is a regular speaker at conferences and user group meet ups in the UK and abroad. He loves to meet new people and talk agile.

This talk will be of interest to anybody interested in project management (such as 2nd year CS projects 😉), HSBC's tech culture and, of course, HSBC's many opportunities in tech, from developers to business management.

Free pizza and drinks will be provided after the talk.

Learn to Code 3: Compound Data Structures

19:00, Thursday, Week 4, Lecture Theatres A and B, Department of Computer Science

Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect and TPP, Silver sponsor Ensoft and bronze sponsor HSBC.

This session will be on compound data structures: mostly lists, and also sets, tuples and dictionaries.
