Annual General Meeting, Competitive Programming and More!
|
|
|
|
Salutations, Old Friends,
It's the penultimate week of term — oh, how time flies by. But, even as the biblical
floods cease and the sun emerges once more, CompSoc ploughs fearsomely on. Your events this week are...
This evening, we're back in the Undergraduate Social Area (again) for our
final competitive programming advanced bootcamp of the term! Come along from
7:30-9:30pm to get some training in.
We close off this
Saturday with a triple header. We'll kick off first with our final CTF contest of the term! Head on down to the UGSA from
5-7pm to work on it in person — details to be announced in our Discord server on the day. Somewhat contemporaneously, through the power of quantum superposition, we also plan to hold our final specialised Learn to Code session of the term. The topic
is yet to be revealed — stay tuned for details.
Later in the day on
Saturday, we'll be holding our Annual General Meeting! Join us in the Undergraduate Social Area from
7pm as we elect each of the members for the 2026-27 Committee and vote on your motions.
If you're interested in running for CompSoc's Committee at the AGM, check out our
election
guide and
register
your interest. Our motions channel is also open — if you'd like to
submit a motion, join our Discord
server and make a post in our motions channel.

Fun Computing Fact: Running elections online may sound like a horrible idea.
How do you handle all of the new opportunities for tampering and fraud? Well, the International Association for Cryptologic Research thought they'd resolved some of this with their favourite technology — cryptography! The Association last year held elections
for its leadership, with a system that required three trustees to combine parts of an encryption key to access the final results. However, this quickly hit a snag when one of the three trustees 'irretrievably' lost their part of the key. The results were deemed
inaccessible, and the elections were cancelled.

CompSoc Annual General Meeting
|
|
This
Saturday, it's time for a scarcely-seen event — CompSoc's Annual General Meeting! We'll convene at
7pm in the Undergraduate Social Area to discuss your suggestions and vote on your motions to improve the governance of the society. Most importantly, we'll also be electing a brand new Committee to take the society through to 2027! Afterwards, we'll
relax with a classic Saturday Social.
If you're a CompSoc member and you're interested in running for a role on Committee,
take a look at our election
guide! After having a read, you can register to stand for election by
filling out our (very basic) form here.
There's plenty of positions up for grabs, and experience on a society committee is both a great way to pad out your CV and also very fun! We'll hear speeches from the candidates for each role and then hold a secret vote to determine the victors.
Voting on motions and CompSoc's next Committee is restricted to members of the society.
If you're not a member yet, hop on over here to
sign up — membership is only £1 for life! Registered members may propose motions in our
Discord
server's motions channel. Please note that you must be present at the
AGM to propose a motion.

7pm, Saturday 7th March

Make sure to join
OxWoCS (Oxford Women in CS), a society we're working closely with, if you identify as a
woman or woman-adjacent person in CS! They have a host of wonderful events on, including talks, panels and socials. Computer Science is unfortunately a subject with one of the biggest gender gaps in Oxford and worldwide, and addressing this is
at the core of OxWoCS.
