From PhD to Startup: Oxford
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/from-phd-to-startup-oxford-with-basilio-gentile-cto-circuit-mind-tickets-56889598320>
*17:30, Monday, 8th Week, Oxford Foundry*
Doing a PhD or Masters in a technical subject and want to make an impact,
but don’t know where to start?
Learn more about the route from academic research to launching your own
startup from founders who have been exactly where you are.
From PhD to Startup: Oxford is an event run each term
by Entrepreneur First
and the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division at
Oxford
University.
This time we will be joined by Basilio Gentile, the co-founder and CTO of
Circuit Mind. Circuit Mind is completely automating the design of
electronic circuit boards. Circuit boards are integral to products we use
everyday - from our smartphones to our televisions and microwaves. But no
two boards are the same. Each one is designed to exact specifications that
meet the requirements of devices, which mean they take a huge amount of
time and skill to create. In fact, every year £40bn and 1.5bn hours are
spent globally in tedious and repetitive circuit board design work. Circuit
Mind plans to change that. Basilio is building complex algorithms that take
in the requirements for a circuit board and outputs the circuit board final
design, ready for manufacture. This means better circuits, designed orders
of magnitude faster, at a fraction of the cost.
Before starting this company, Basilio completed a Masters in Control
Systems Engineering, a Masters in Mathematical Modeling and Computation and
a PhD in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich. His mastery of
high-performance mathematical algorithms for complex systems is what sits
at the core of Circuit Mind’s solution. He turned down postdocs at Harvard
and Berkeley to join Entrepreneur First, where he met his co-founder Tomide
and they created Circuit Mind.
Join us to hear more about Basilio’s research and journey. *Please arrive
no later than 5.30pm.*
Pizza and beer are, of course, on us.

Outside Events DSTL 2019 Fire Hack
*We have the following message to relay from the 2019 Fire Hack Team:*
Hi CompSoc,
We’re inviting students to an international Hackathon to develop new ways
of using drones to fight wildfires. We feel you and your society will be
interested in this event and could excel in the hackathon. On 29th-31st
March in Southampton join us for the Swarm and Search AI Challenge and
support the emergency services to develop new ways of using drones to fight
wildfires.
Over the course of the weekend there will be a series of three heats and
the overall winners of the hackathon will be invited to the US – travel and
accommodation paid for – to demonstrate their winning concepts and ideas
for future development at a special event at the British Embassy, as well
as being recognised at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems
International Expo 2019.
This is a unique opportunity for you and the society to solve real
(potentially lifesaving) applications. The CAA have strict regulations on
flying multiple air vehicles so this really is the first step to getting
swarms airborne. Alongside the hacking this will be an entertaining
weekend, with free food and break out games and challenges. Industry
participants and experts in drone and autonomy technology will be available
to offer advice on how to progress your idea and career.
We’re asking if you could share this challenge: It will be a hackathon
they’ll enjoy and could be a career changing event for them. But more
importantly, successful solutions could be moved onto physical platforms
that could potentially save lives. For more information please visit our
Devpost page or reply to this email. This is a ticketed event and numbers
are limited so register for a free ticket at Eventbrite.
Kind regards,
Greg
