CompSoc, Week 4

Hello, everyone. Firstly, apologies about the website being unavailable earlier in the week. We've been having some server issues, although everything should be working reasonably well now. This week we have two events! See below for details. Telepathy ========= Thursday 1st November, 20:00 Stafford Crane Room, Keble College Robert McQueen of Collabora will extol the virtues of Telepathy, the instant messaging framework used on the Nokia N800, the One Laptop Per Child project, and on a Unix desktop near you. He'll introduce D-Bus (the IPC system underlying Telepathy), discuss novel uses of IM (such as collaborative editing and podcast recording) that Telepathy makes feasible, and will demonstrate how to do useful IM-related things with surprisingly few lines of Python. There will be someone at the Keble Porters' Lodge to show you to the talk; this may involve a short wait outside if the porters don't let us keep the door open, but we'll keep sticking our heads out (quite literally). Bletchley Park Trip =================== Saturday 3rd November, 10:00ish Bletchley Park (meet at Gloucester Green Bus Station) We plan to go and visit Bletchley Park, one of the homes of modern cryptography, and home of the World War I codebreaking effort. We'll be travelling to Bletchley using the bus and train; an exact timetable will be available shortly, but we'll be catching the X5 from Gloucester Green bus station to Milton Keynes, and then taking the train from there to Bletchley. Travel costs should be less than £14, and once we've figured out the best way to price things up we'll have a more exact figure. Admission to Bletchley itself is £8, and if you plan to eat at the cafe there you'll need more money (expect standard visitor-attraction-cafe prices). We will probably be leaving around 10ish in the morning (quite likely the 10:05 bus from gloucester green), and getting to Bletchley around 11:30, and returning sometime in the afternoon. If you're planning to go on the Bletchley trip, then email me so I can get some idea of numbers. Hopefully we'll see you at one or more events this week, they're both looking to be pretty good ones! Bear in mind that this is the last week for free admission to events; from next week, non-members will get charged £2 at the door. CompSoc, Week 3/4

Hello everyone. Firstly, a talk move. In case you haven't heard, the talk we had scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday 25th) has been moved to Thursday next week; you can see the new details about it on the website at [1]. I'll be emailing around again next week with the summary and location instructions, as usual. Secondly, we're going ahead with the Bletchley Park trip, as the response has been overwhelmingly positive. You can read some initial information about it at [2]; we'll be getting more accurate info as time passes. I'll also be elaborating more on this in my next email. We'll be asking for some idea of numbers for the Bletchley trip; if you know already you can make it, then please reply to me (president(a)ox.compsoc.net) saying so. On a side note, we still have three CompSoc tshirts lying around (one medium, two large) from our print run over the summer; if you'd like one, email me. Finally, someone has written into me asking for information about web filtering at colleges, so if you have filtering at your college, then please email me (president(a)ox.compsoc.net) with a few details about it, and I'll forward it on. CompSoc, Week 2

Hello, everyone. This week, we have the OUCS tour! OUCS Tour ========= Wednesday 17th October, 17:30 OUCS: see http://www.ox.compsoc.net/venues/OUCS/ Somewhat of a CompSoc tradition, we'll be having a tour of OUCS' machine room, with several mostly-willing OUCS people on hand to show you around, answer questions, and suchlike. It's normally a great insight into the bowels of this most important of departments, and offers many great challenges (such as figuring out quite what their naming scheme is). Meet at the main OUCS entrance on Banbury Road for 17:30; there will be a sign up so you know you're at the right place. We hope to see many of you there; if you're new to the society, and haven't yet handed in your registration form and/or some moneys, then feel free to bring them along to the event. CompSoc, Week One

Welcome back, everyone, and welcome to First Week. I hope you all enjoyed your summer, and CompSoc is back in action this term with some new events. The termcard is now up on the website [0], so have a look down it and see what we have planned. This week, we have a pubmeet at the Lamb and Flag from about 8pm on Thursday (11th Oct). Come along, have a drink, and recant as many anecdotes as you can manage. Extra points go to anyone who manages to convince a fresher to join the society... If you ordered a CompSoc t-shirt, and will be coming along, email me, and I'll bring yours to the pub. Make sure to have £14 handy, as well, otherwise it might be difficult to take yours from the bag. We also have four spare ones (2 large, 2 medium), so if you fancy one (they look somewhat like [1]), email me and turn up with the relevant cash. Next week we have the usual OUCS tour, and our first speaker is in Third Week. I'll be writing more about those closer to the time, though, so for now, we hope to see you on Thursday!
