This week we will only be awarding a prize to new members - as our older ones already (hopefully!) know what the answer is. Once you have figured it out go to http://compsoc.dartoxia.com/answer/<ANSWER GOES HERE>. Anyone (with a .ox.ac.uk email address) can sign up to the competition through the http://compsoc.dartoxia.com website, but only members can receive prizes. Compsoc.dartoxia.com isn't connected to the compsoc network, and so you will need to make a new account to participate. Hello all, Those of you who are keen followers of CompSoc activity will know that a few weeks ago a new committee were elected. Now it is time for the Termly General Meeting! We will be meeting at 7PM Thursday 8th Week (ie. next Thursday) at the Lamb and Flag. New Compsoc Committee

Dear CompSoc members, Recently an EGM was called to elect a new committee following a period of inactivity for the society - I am writing as co-president of the successfully elected committee to introduce myself and the rest of us. We are all 2nd year Computer Scientists, and have formed the committee as follows: - Co-Presidents - Alex Kavvos (Univ) and Ben Gazzard (St Catz) - Secretary - Ian Jones (Balliol) - Treasurer - Laurens Lemaire (St Catz) Together we hope to rebuild the society and will be making considerable effort to attract members across many academic years as active membership has likely dwindled. Currently we do not have any plans to organise any specific events this term. Instead we aim to focus on: - Building a fantastic term card for Michaelmas 2011 - Building links with the comlab for access to lecture halls - Seeking sponsorship/external funding to potentially lower membership costs/subsidise events - Assess the types of events run by other Computer Societies at other universities to offer a diverse range of activities - Devising more 'hands on' type events We are eager to hear any thoughts on the above or any suggestions you have. It would be great to find that we still have some active student members supporting the society. Finally, we hope to hold a TGM at the end of 7th week - with the plan to report on our plans in more detail then. More details about that will be sent closer to the time though. Compsoc suspended; new committee sought!

Hello all, I write as the currently coopted senior member of Compsoc, to let you know that as of the AGM in Hilary term this year, Compsoc has been unable to elect a committee due to lack of candidates, and so formal operation of the society has been suspended. This means that unless someone steps up, there will not be a presence at this year's Freshers' Fair, and not much chance of a termcard or any other events next academic year. It also means that we can't realistically accept any new members. We are no longer registered with the University Clubs' committee and, amongst other things, this means that we are no longer called Oxford *University* Computer Society but just Oxford Computer Society. It's not yet clear for how long the society can remain in this state, neither fully operational nor having been dissolved, but it would not make sense for it to stay this way for more than a couple of terms. I would like to once again urge any student member who has an interest in the continued existence of the society to get in touch as soon as possible so that an interim committee who can provide a Freshers' Fair presence and one or two events for next term can be formed. Hopefully we would then hold an EGM next term to elect a normal committee. The society has, I think most people would agree, been an excellent source of informative talks and activities over the years, and I firmly believe that it still has a place - although its focus will naturally evolve with the evolution of computing in the University and more generally. Stepping forward now and helping out would not only help ensure that a focal point for computer enthusiasts is maintained in the student University, but also provides an impressive addition to any graduate CV. In addition to this, I would like to bring your attention to the report on constitutional reform, presented at the last AGM by our outgoing Secretary. <http://www.ox.compsoc.net/minutes/Report_on_Constitutional_Reform/> This may be of interest to those wishing to play a role in the future of the society, and Adam has made some very interesting points about possible changes to the consitution and other more practical matters. Note that for the time being, the services provided by the Compsoc network remain unaltered. However, if the society is not restarted within a few terms it is very likely that some, if not all services, would have to be withdrawn. The currently acting sysadmins can be contacted at the usual address. It is highly desirable that a new committee be able to co-opt a new Systems Administration Coordinator (SAC) as soon as possible, in order to ensure that the network remains viable. Ig Nobel UK Tour 2010 - Thurs 11th March (8th Week), 7pm

The Ig Nobel Prizes honour achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honour the imaginative - and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology. What and who: The shows feature Marc Abrahams, organizer of the Ig Nobel Prizes, editor of the Annals of Improbable Research, and Guardian columnist, together with a gaggle of Ig Nobel Prize winners and other improbable researchers. Marc Abrahams will review the past year's improbable research and Ig Nobel Prize winners. Several Ig winners (and/or colleagues) will try to explain what they did and why they did it, and will field questions. Many of the speakers are new to the tour. Some are returning after previous appearances, now armed with surprising new topics. Each show will include a unique combination of individuals. Here are some of the stars of the Oxford event: Elena Bodnar, a physician, is a 2009 Ig Nobel Prize winner in public health, for inventing a brassiere that, in an emergency, can be quickly converted into a pair of protective face masks, one for the brassiere wearer and one to be given to some needy bystander. Chris McManus wrote the study "Scrotal Asymmetry in Man and in Ancient Sculpture" for which he later received the 2002 Ig Nobel Medicine Prize. He is Professor of Psychology and Medical Education at University College London. On this year's tour he will explain some of the ways left and right get mixed up through honest error, stupid incompetence, and malicious intent to deceive. Dan Meyer, a sword swallower, shared the 2007 Ig Nobel Medicine Prize for the penetrating medical report "Sword Swallowing and Its Side Effects". In 2010 he will present evidence of some of the unexpected physical objects people have swallowed. David Sims, 2008 Ig Nobel Literature Prize winner for his study "You Bastard: A Narrative Exploration of the Experience of Indignation within Organizations". Thursday 8th Week (March 11th) 7:00pm - 8:45pm. Doors open 6.30pm. [CompSoc] Nobody likes a lie in - Bletchley Park trip tomorrow!

Meet at Gloucester Green bus station on George Street at 9:15am if you want to come on the trip to Bletchley Park. It will be a fun day. In addition, we will be having a talk by Ensoft next Thursday. The last talk they gave was very successful.
