OUCS Data Centre Tour and Pub Meet on Thursday!

This coming Thursday (the 15th) the staff at Oxford University Computing Services have graciously invited us on a tour of their data centre. The tour starts at 17:30, and *YOU MUST BRING YOUR BOD CARD* otherwise the receptionist will not let you in. You will get the opportunity to: - See lots of computers, flashing lights, cables, air conditioning ducts - See the amazing robot arm that moves hard disks around and then punches you in the face - Ask awkward questions about file sharing (don't do this) - Complain about nexus email (don't do this either) - Ask genuinely interesting questions about sysadmin/operating systems/bandwidth Afterwards, we will go to the pub, where you can talk to people who won't glaze over if you start talking about something vaguely technical. The person to ask the best question(s) on the tour gets a free drink at the pub afterwards! Thanks, Sophie (OUHS President) Bletchley Park and the impact of its work on the Second World War Brian Oakley C.B.E Wednesday 3rd June 8.15pm Quarrell Room, Exeter College Bletchley Park was the centre of British intelligence and code-breaking in the Second World War. Many of the code-breakers were recruits from Oxford and Cambridge. Their contribution to the war effort has always been underestimated because of the secrecy surrounding their actions. Brian Oakley served in the Second World War as an Army signaller passing the enemies communications on to code breakers at Bletchley Park and has now become one of its foremost historians. His fascination with Bletchley Park follows a career strongly linked with the development of technology and computing. Having graduated with a science degree from Exeter College, Brian Oakley was a fellow of the Institute of Physics and president of the British Computer Society. He was also a senior civil servant, heading up a project for the development of British technology in the 1980s. There is still time to decide to give a talk, but of course you are still welcome to come along and just watch.

Today's Peter Molyneux Talk Cancelled

I have just received a phone call from Peter Molyneux's PA and was told that he would not be able to attend today's talk due to unspecified family reasons. The new committee are pleased to announce the first event for this term. Peter Molyneux will be giving a talk (we have not yet been informed of the subject matter) this Thursday at Keble College at 8pm. People will be at the Porters' Lodge before 8pm to direct people to the correct room. When the talk has ended we will retire to a local pub, as is usual. Peter Molyneux is a prominent game developer, responsible for titles such as Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Theme Park, Black & White and Fable. Hope to see you there, - Jon

Just a quick note to say that the AGM will be held in the Turf Tavern tomorrow, at 7pm. We now have three nominees for the new committee, so voting should be reasonably quick, and we're planning to decamp to a restaurant afterwards for a meal, as the last social of term. Week 7: Nominations, and some announcements

Well, it's that time of the year, and the Compsoc AGM will be coming up. It'll be held at a yet-to-be-decided restaurant next Thursday; I'll email about the specific details next week. More importantly, we are now asking for nominees for the positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer. The current committee are all stepping down, and so we need at least one nominee for each position. If you're interested, or would like to know what each job involves, there's a somewhat legalese description of them in the Constitution [1], or you can email president@, secretary@ or treasurer@ and ask us to give a better description! Nominations should be in by midnight on Weds, 11th March, to committee(a)ox.compsoc.net, and you should name a proposer and seconder who will be present at the AGM (if you don't have one, and we know you, some of the committee will be happy to assist). Week 4: Video Night

This week, it's video time... Video Night =========== Wednesday 11th February, 19:00 Lecture Room B, Worcester College In the finest CompSoc tradition, we'll be showing one or more 'traditional' geeky films - suggestions (or, indeed, DVDs of films) are more than welcome. Even better, if turnout looks good enough, we'll invest in some popcorn and other filmish snacks. I have WarGames, so that's likely to be one of the films. If you're planning on coming, let me know, so I can go buy some crisps/popcorn/etc. Also, feel free to bring your own food along, as long as it's not too messy - we need to leave the room clean. Also in the news, we've just confirmed another talk towards the end of term, this time from Peter Molyneux - we're currently finding a venue for that. Hopefully I'll see plenty of you on Wednesday! Week 3: Lightning Talks

Lightning Talks =============== Thursday 5th February, 20:00 Roy Griffiths Room, Keble College Lightning talks were a great success last year, and so we're bringing it back for another go this week. For those not familiar with the format, lightning talks is an event where attendees are invited (but not required!) to give a short, 5-10 minute talk on a subject of their choice. Usually, talks are about things you know or have done recently (for example, I'll be doing one on my location-tracking site). They're good fun, and you have a wonderfully captive audience... If you're thinking of giving a talk, then please sling me an email, and we'll publish the list of confirmed talks on Thursday. Even if you don't tell me you're doing one, you're welcome to come along and give one after the people who confirmed - there's usually time! As usual, there will be someone at the Keble lodge to point you towards the room. They may or may not be very cold and located under two feet of snow.
