It;s for the history society but Brian Oakley has been involved in a lot of the development surrounding early computers. Bletchley Park and the impact of its work on the Second World War Brian Oakley C.B.E Wednesday 3rd June 8.15pm Quarrell Room, Exeter College
Bletchley Park was the centre of British intelligence and code-breaking in the Second World War. Many of the code-breakers were recruits from Oxford and Cambridge. Their contribution to the war effort has always been underestimated because of the secrecy surrounding their actions.
Brian Oakley served in the Second World War as an Army signaller passing the enemies communications on to code breakers at Bletchley Park and has now become one of its foremost historians. His fascination with Bletchley Park follows a career strongly linked with the development of technology and computing. Having graduated with a science degree from Exeter College, Brian Oakley was a fellow of the Institute of Physics and president of the British Computer Society. He was also a senior civil servant, heading up a project for the development of British technology in the 1980s.
Free for OUHS members, £3 for non-members Wine will be served after the talk.
