Film Night Poll, and Capture the Flag vs Cambridge

Hi, The poll for film night is now on the facebook event. Expendables 2 is currently leading, so get on there and fix this! http://www.facebook.com/events/340775332701529 In slightly more significant news, we have been contacted by Cambridge University Cyber Security Soc, who have suggested a capture the flag competition between our societies. At the moment it's quite early in the planning stages, but please say if you would be interested so we can get something concrete sorted out. Email me, Sam, or Greg if you're interested, please. Bye, Everybody! This week we had the AGM, and a new committee has been elected, so this is my last email to you guys as president. Your new president next term will be Sam, who is our current secretary. The other new committee members are as follows - Secretary: Greg O'Connor, Treasurer: Manol Vitanov, Systems Adminstration Coordinator: Piotr Nosalik, Social Secretary: Maciej Bargiel and Alex Cheadle, Gaming Secretary: Elliot Prior. I will remain on the committee without a specific role, so you're not rid of me just yet. Gratz to everyone! This week we have film night at Catz, be sure to come along. Hi Everybody! Sorry about the lateness of this email - I was completely knackered after paintball, and entirely forgot about it. Last week was a great week for comp soc, on Wednesday we had a great talk on secure distributed computing from Nigel Smart, as always on Saturday geek night was great fun, and, most importantly of all, we had our inaugural Oxford Comp Soc vs CUCaTS paintball match. I am quite sure everyone had a great time despite the horrendous mud, and bitter cold. *A huge thanks to Palantir for PAYING FOR EVERYONE TO GO PAINTBALLING.* This week we have the Annual General Meeting, which may not be as exciting as paintball, but is at least as important - at the AGM we vote in a new committe, and discuss what the society should be doing next term, so it's important to come along and have your say. And of course there's going to be free pizza. * NB* this event is on *Tuesday *due to room booking constraints. Hi Everybody! Hopefully you all enjoyed games night, which was huge again, and this time we had wired internet! To follow it up we have a very busy week - Wednesday we have a talk from security expert Nigel Smart, from Bristol University, on Saturday we have, as usual, geek night, and on Sunday, we have the postponed paintball vs Cambridge! This time the weather forecast is favourable, and we have more people booked to come, so it should be a great day! Details of all of this below. Pizza will be served afterwards. Computing on Encrypted Data In the last couple of years amazing advances have been made on techniques to perform computation on encrypted data. Some of the techniques are even becoming practical. In this talk I will show a novel technique which utilizes techniques used in Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) schemes to provide efficiency improvements in Multi-Party Computation (MPC) protocols. No prior knowledge of FHE or MPC will be assumed. If you plan on attending you will need to bring a laptop with any games you want to play*installed and updated*- the internet will be too slow to download games and updates! You will also need a LAN cable and probably a power supply for your laptop. Team Fortess 2 and Super Monday Night Combat are both free to install and play fromstore.steampowered.com/ <http://store.steampowered.com/>(you have to install Steam first, though). It is also possible to install TF2 from another computer with it already installed on, we will probably be able to facilitate this but should stress that it is a much better idea to*make sure it is installed and up to date beforehand!*If there are any other games you'd like to play (and think others will have) bring them along and we might play them too! Unity Event Canceled - Replaced with Lightning Talks

Hi Everyone, Due to Unity Technologies not being able to come down and give us a talk, after discussion, the committee have decided to instead host a lightning talks session (a number of 5-10 minute talks packed together one after another). So if you have something computer-related you would like to present to attendees of this event, just send an email over to committee(a)ox.compsoc.net letting us know that you're interested, so that we know how many speakers to expect. The event is going to take place in at the same time and place that the unity talk was going to, Wed 30th January, 6:30pm in Lecture Theatre A. So yes you also have a projector if you would like to incorporate that into your presentation. Hi everybody, Unfotunately Unity are unable to come and do their talk next week, so we are currently trying to find a replacement event. We will send out details of that as soon as we know about them. Sorry for anyone excited for the event, we will try to rearrange this talk for next term. One potential option is to have a set of lightning talks where anyone can do a brief talk on whichever computer related subject they like. If you would like a chance to practise your public speaking, and have an idea for such a talk, please get in touch - if we do end up doing it would be nice to know how many speakers we could get.
