Human-like AI talk with Prof Mark Lee, a distinguished intelligent systems researcher!
[Gaming picture]
Artificial intelligence has made enormous advances over the last decade. But concerns with the deep learning approach are growing. If AI is becoming so powerful, why are there issues with errors, bias, safety, and resources? If AI is advancing so fast, why isn’t it more human-friendly? And why is AI nowhere near human intelligence?
This talk will explore these problems and argue that we need to move to an AI that behaves more like humans, has a subjective perspective, and is much more adaptive. It will draw on the speaker's research and condense his experience for the next steps towards a more human-centred approach.
Speaker Bio:
Mark Lee is Emeritus Professor of Intelligent Systems in the Department of Computer Science at Aberystwyth University. Prof Lee's main research interests concern Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. He has won over £12m of research funding from UK and EU agencies, published over 200 papers, and collaborates with colleagues in many countries and with major industrial companies. Prof Lee has degrees in engineering (Swansea), a PhD in psychology (Nottingham), and is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. His most recent work is in the new field of Developmental Robotics which is exploring computational models of infant development for use as novel robot learning techniques.

Saturday Social: Annual General Meeting
[Gaming picture]
Join us for our Annual General Meeting, where we discuss YOUR suggestions on how to make the society better... and more importantly, choose/vote in our new committee! Voting is members-only, but we'll appreciate any and all feedback. We'll hear from everyone running and get a solid team together!
Please send your motions via the dedicated channel on our Discord and run for roles using the form below before Friday 12pm! Committee Roles to run for!
-- CORE COMMITTEE ROLES --
-- We need people for these roles most!! --
President:
- Primary job consists of managing the rest of the society, making sure that each facet of the society is working as intended. As such you need to have good leadership and team skills.
- You'll decide the overall the direction that the society takes.
- During the summer, a bulk of your work will consist of contacting sponsors to get them to re-sponsor the society for another year or to try to onboard new sponsors.
- If there is a Vice-President elected then you can share the workload with them how you and them see fit.
Secretary:
- Primarily deals with the communications that the society gets through email, from member inquiries to sponsors.
- Also deals with memberships and mailing list; making sure people are on the right mailing lists and that members receive the benefits they are promised.
- Creates the weekly newsletter.
- If there is no branding officer or no IT officer then the responsibilities for each is given to the secretary by default (though you can reshuffle the duties within committee so long as it gets done).
Treasurer:
- Is the person responsible that makes sure that others get the money they require as soon as possible, as well as making sure that the society gets what it is owed, primarily from sponsors.
- Creates budgets for each term to regulate our spending and make sure we don't overspend.
- Creates accounts to make sure money is being used as expected and that we have the amount we expect.
-- OTHER COMMITTEE ROLES --
Vice-President:
- Shares responsibilities with the President. How this is arranged is up to those elected but in the past this has often manifested with the Vice-President dealing with the sponsors and the President with managing the society.
Social Secretary(/ies):
- Primary aim is to plan and organise the socials we hold weekly each term, and as such the bulk of the work is done over vacations as to prepare for having a term card out on time.
- Communicates with department to make sure we have access to the spaces we want to use for our events.
Learn to Code Officers:
- Job is to run the annual Learn-to-Code beginners python workshop that the CompSoc holds every Michaelmas. The slides have already been created and as such all that is needed from someone holding this role is to update them if needed and otherwise offer an hour of their time each week in MT to teach the content to those attending.
Competitive Programming Officers:
- Plans and runs any Competitive Programming styled events during the year. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of how frequently you'd like to run the events and when you want to run them.
- Ideally you'd have a decent understanding and experience in Competitive Programming already.
Marketing/Branding Manager:
- Handles social media and newsletter output and general communication of our events to members through several channels.
- Creates the society's visuals, in the images we use in social media posts, our term cards or stash!

- The perfect role for artists, creative computer fans or PicsArt enjoyers.
IT Officer:
- The role's responsibilities concern the upkeep of our website, servers and general technical equipment (VR headset, drones etc). The website is in WordPress and as such is quite simple to update; no experience in web development is required.
Head of Talks:
- Primary job is to invite speakers to the CompSoc and arrange a talks timetable for the term.
- As with social secretary this needs to be done before term starts for the termcard and as such a bulk of the work is spent in the vacation sending emails and waiting for correspondence.

Mediterranean ML Summer School
A message from the Robotics dept.:
I am co-organizing the Mediterranean Machine Learning (M2L) summer school (www.m2lschool.org<http://www.m2lschool.org>) to promote education on state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques in the Mediterranean region (hence the name) to university students, graduates, and the industry. After two successful years in Italy, and distinguished speakers from Google, Microsoft, Apple, NYU, Cambridge, Oxford and many local companies, this year, it will take place in the last week of August 2023 in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Last year we counted more than 180 participants from the hosting country and over the world. The one-week curriculum focuses on Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing and Reinforcement Learning. The summer school is free and the applications just opened at https://www.m2lschool.org/!!

HT3 Newsletter: Learn Web Dev: JavaScript & an AWESOME AI ART BATTLE- Joint With Art Soc!
Hi everyone,
Computers are cool. I've been at a hackathon all weekend with some friends, and someone there made a receipt printer print out karaoke lyrics (to time!) and rickrolled us all. Pretty inventive! We managed to make a full - and really cool - rhythm/ fighter/ catgirl (:3) game we're all really proud of. There's like 10 seconds of our project in the hackathon highlights video here (https://youtu.be/8ybW48rKBME) if you wanna check it out! The art soc social is going to be super fun so make sure you come!

This Saturday we will do more web dev. We will look into JavaScript, allowing you to respond to user input on your website. JavaScript will not take up the whole session, there should be plenty of time for you to create your own web design using what you have learnt so far and I can help out when you get stuck.
Also don't worry if you missed the first two sessions, I will try my best to bring you up to speed. The materials are here: https://gg.gg/webandgit

Saturday Social: AI Art Battle with Art Soc!!!
[Gaming picture]
Is AI art scary? Ghostly? Inspirational? Unique? (...Fuelled by massive art theft? ...that one's not up for debate guys.) Can we even really call it art?
Whatever your views, come join us for an epic AI inspired art battle- we'll be using an AI to generate prompts and then draw them, competing against Big Computer to make the best and most creative pieces. If you can't draw, try having a haiku-off against ChatGPT, or just helping us judge!
We'll have some materials and paper but we'd love it if you bring your own too!
