Fun Computing Fact: Apple recently completed the transition of their Mac line from Intel to ARM processors. But, while we may have been used to seeing Windows on a Mac before 2020, did you know that the Intel to ARM transition wasn't Apple's first platform shift, or even their second – it was their third!
The Macintosh in 1984 debuted with a processor based on Motorola's legacy 68k architecture. However, this quickly looked aged, and in 1994, Apple began a transition to the PowerPC architecture with the debut of the Power Macintosh. This relied heavily upon a low-level 68k emulator in Mac OS, which even ran core operating system code!
After the failure to make a promised 3 GHz Mac, Apple began the transition from PowerPC to Intel in 2006. The work was easier this time – Mac OS X had been compiled for Intel for most of its existence. For software, Apple included the Rosetta dynamic translation software, which could launch seamlessly to run PowerPC apps on Intel Macs. They also introduced Universal binaries, which packed PowerPC and Intel code together in one app, allowing one binary to be used on either platform at full speed.

Fun Computing Fact: You may by now be familiar with Bluesky, a decentralised Twitter replacement which has been rapidly growing since the US election earlier this month. Interestingly, however, distributed social media sites predate both Bluesky and its closest competitor, Mastodon, by several years!
Along with sharing characteristics of other distributed networks like email and Usenet, one of the first decentralised social networks was Diaspora – a Facebook competitor created in 2010 by students at New York University's mathematical sciences institute. Much like the Personal Data Servers of Bluesky's AT Protocol and the ActivityPub instances which form Mastodon, the Diaspora network consists of separately maintained federated pods which store user data and content.

Fun Computing Fact: Are you familiar with relational databases? If so, you may be interested to hear about Microsoft's attempt to model a computer's file system as a relational database! Windows Future Storage (WinFS for short) allowed programs to query the file system based on a file's metadata and for pieces of data on the volume to be linked by relationships.
WinFS was born from the Object File System which was part of Microsoft's ill-fated Cairo project for Windows in the 90s. It later became part of Windows Codename Longhorn, which went through a long and troubled development process from 2001 until its release as Windows Vista in 2006. Despite two beta versions of WinFS for Windows XP releasing in the intervening period, WinFS was axed for the final product, with only small individual components making their way into Vista.

Fun Computing Fact: We're going back to the Soviet Union for today's fun fact! Top-level domains have been the subject of recent media speculation with the planned handover of the British Indian Ocean Territory, which could spell doom for websites making use of its .io TLD. One TLD that did survive past its country, however, is the .su TLD!
Originally designated for use within the former Soviet Union, the .su TLD was first allocated in September 1990 – only a year and three months before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It saw very little use for its intended purpose, being used most notably by the USSR's first Internet service provider, demos.su. It was, however, used by the Russian Federation before it received its own .ru TLD, and remains extant to this day! (and is primarily used for cybercrime...)
