Trinity Term Week 5 Newsletter
Problem Sheet and Panic!
Bonjour and Bienvenue, Benefactor,
Welcome to Fifth Week! As we continue to rumble on right through the half-way point of the term, we have a quieter week in store for you after last week's double whammy of fun drinks events.
Are you cautiously eyeing your looming exam timetable? Come on down to the Undergraduate Social Area for Problem Sheet and Panic 2: Electric Boogaloo this Saturday! We'll help you beat the pangs of procrastination and get through that workload with the classic CompSoc combination of snacks and pizza1.
Finally, as we don't have any events planned for next week, we want to hear about cool things you're working on for next week's newsletter! If you have something you've made that you'd like to see showcased, feel free to email me or reach out through Discord, and we may well include it in our next issue!
— Declan, CompSoc Secretary
1 And maybe some ice cream like last time? You'll have to come along to find out...
Fun Computing Fact: Let's return once more to the theme of semaphores and telegraphs from last week; did you know the first cyberattack actually happened in France all the way back in 1834? Back then, the French telegraph system was used to speed up the transmission of the latest financial data. However, it still wasn't fast — the data took three days to send! Brothers François and Joseph Blanc took advantage of this by bribing operators between the terminus points of Bordeaux and Paris to reveal the information early through secret details hidden in normal-looking messages, and thus effectively play the market to their advantage.

Fun Computing Fact: If I say the word 'semaphore', what comes to mind? A neat little concurrency primitive? Well, today's fun fact concerns the rather older type of semaphore — the ones where moving physical parts are used as long-distance visual signals. If you think that's a horribly antiquated technology with no use in the modern world besides railways... well, you'd be right, but that didn't stop the Internet Engineering Task Force from writing RFC 4824<https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc4824> in 2007. Otherwise known as the Semaphore Flag Signalling System, RFC 4824 describes a proposed method to transmit Internet Protocol (IP) packets over semaphore. Somehow, I'm not sure it'll catch on...

Trinity Term Week 3 Newsletter
Post Office Talk and Saturday Social!
Welcome Back, Old Friend,
The time just keeps rolling on by... welcome to Third Week! As your loyal envoy, it is my privilege to tell you about the two fun events we have planned for you this week.
First, some quick amendments to the termcard; the Jazz Night and Junkyard Golf events planned for this week will unfortunately not be able to go ahead. But let's pretend that didn't happen and move swiftly on to what we have planned instead...
Tomorrow, we have an exciting talk brought to you by two former CompSoc members! David North and Stephen White from CoreFiling will be appearing to give a talk on what the IT industry can learn from the now infamous scandal surrounding the Post Office's Horizon IT system.
On Saturday, we're back down in the UGSA once more for our Saturday Problem Sheet and Panic social! Come along and enjoy plenty of free CompSoc-funded snacks... and, of course, your weekly hit of pizza. Details, as always, are below.
- Declan, CompSoc Secretary
Fun Computing Fact: When the iPod debuted in 2001, it changed the way we listen to music forever. When the iPhone showed up on the scene in 2007, it happened again for our phone calls. But did you know how close we came to neither of these products existing? In the mid-90s, Apple faced dire financial issues while searching desperately for a successor to the aging Mac OS 7. Numerous contenders were named - including Windows NT! Be Inc's BeOS was a strong option, but it wasn't to Be™. Instead, Apple decided to rehire the previouly fired Steve Jobs by acquiring his NeXT company, which developed the NeXTSTEP operating system - NeXTSTEP became Mac OS X and Steve Jobs launched the iMac, revitalising the company and allowing it to make the iPod. The rest is history!

Post Office Horizon Talk
[A group of people standing on a sidewalk Description automatically generated]
We'll be meeting two former CompSoc members this week to hear about the Post Office Horizon scandal! We'll be joined tomorrow by David North and Stephen White from CoreFiling, who are dropping in to give a talk in which we'll be taking a look at what the IT industry should learn from what is now the largest miscarriage of justice in British history.
This talk is not being held in the Department of Computer Science. Do not go to the Department of Computer Science. You will look silly and you will feel silly.
