Hello everyone,
Thanks for signing up to CompSoc's freshers' fair mailing list -
it's great to have your interest, and we hope you'll enjoy our events
this term.
The first event, as those of you who took some paper from us will know,
is the Freshers' Meet:
Freshers' Meet
--------------
Thursday 16th October (Thursday 1st Week), 19:00
Prestwich Room, St John's College
The Freshers' Meet is your chance to come along and meet the current
committee and current members, and find out more about what we do, as well
as enjoy some of the free food and drink we'll be putting on.
It starts at 7pm but we'll be there all evening, so feel free to pop in and
say hello if you're around later. The room will be signposted from the
St John's
Porters' Lodge, and one of us will be there at the start to say hello as
well.
I hope to see you there; if you want to sign up to CompSoc, we'll have
membership forms on hand, and if you took one at the Fair you can hand it in
there and then (preferably with the money, but you can always pidge that
to us).
Remember, all of the events from now until 4th week are free for
non-members,
so come along and enjoy them! Next week we'll have the OUCS tour and a
pubmeet; I'll send along more details nearer the time. You can always find
the current termcard at http://ox.compsoc.net/ - as we confirm venues and
get more speaker details, they'll appear there.
See you Thursday!

Sorry to use the stereotypical capital letters, but just a quick reminder
that we have Gervase Markham speaking tonight about Bugzilla, described
by the
man himself as "an amusing wander through its development and some musings
about the bug tracking process".
It's at Keble at 8 - show up at the Porter's Lodge, and a Friendly Compsoc
Member (tm) will show you to the room.
Hope to see you there!

Hello, ex-freshers, and other people who found us at the Fair last term!
I'm spamming you one last time to just let you know about the last two
CompSoc events this term; you can find details online at
http://ox.compsoc.net/termcards/2008/hilary/ about the two talks, one
by Gervase Markham, who is a very entertaining speaker and who will
be giving us an "amusing wander through the development of Bugzilla".
The other is by Rebellion, a local games development company. They'll
be giving a talk about what they do, who they deal with, and where they
think games are headed.
We're also holding our elections in Week 8 - if you've come along to
some of our previous events, or suddenly feel like you want to join
the low-workload committee, then send me an email - you can read more
about the positions at http://ox.compsoc.net/constitution/
Hope you're all having a good term, and hope to see some of you
at events soon!

Well, we enter the final week of term, and as things wind down we have
one event left!
TGM and Christmas Party
=======================
Monday 26th November, 20:00
Oscar Wilde Room, Magdalen
The Termly General Meeting, the pinnacle of democracy. We'll go over the
term, make sure everything is in order, check our Treasurer hasn't fled
to a foreign country with CompSoc's fortune, and hopefully get it over
with in a reasonably short amount of time (I believe the record is
around 4 minutes).
After that's over, we'll be having a small Christmas party, with some
free food and whatever else we can think of - suggestions, games, or
whatever are more than welcome!
There will be someone at the Magdalen porter's lodge to guide you over
to the room.
However, the glorious Compsoc is not the only organisation who gather
people into rooms in Oxford. Oxford Geek Night 4 is this week!
Oxford Geek Night 4
===================
Wednesday 28 November, 19:30
Upstairs, Jericho Tavern
Oxford Geek Nights offer a chance for web developers and designers in
the local area to get together, share their skills and talk about new
ideas, techniques and technologies.
This fourth OGN will consist of two keynote talks of 15 minutes each,
followed after a healthy period of socialising including two sets of
5-minute long microslot sessions.
You can see details of the talks at
http://oxford.geeknights.net/2007/nov-28th/
I highly recommend it, being a web-type myself, but it's really
interesting even if you haven't been consumed by CSS, AJAX and Web 2.0.
That's the lot for now. Hopefully we'll see you at the TGM; if not, you
can wait anxiously for our stellar line up of events next term!

Just a quick reminder that the Lightning Talks are tonight, at
Worcester, at 8 (there will, of course, be someone at the lodge).
If you're going to speak at the event, or just want to come along to the
"speaker's dinner" (warning: you may be coerced into talking during it),
then we'll be meeting at the Gourmet Burger Kitchen [1] at 6.15.
See you tonight! The talk lineup is looking pretty good, if I can say so
myself...

It's week 7, and time for an event! Shocking... read on for more.
Lightning Talks
===============
Thursday 22nd November, 20:00
Morley Fletcher Room, Worcester
One room, one projector, and many speakers. Everyone is invited to give
a short talk on something they're involved in or interested in; don't
worry if you don't like public speaking, you're more than welcome to
watch the rest of us screw it up (although, of course, this would be a
great place to give a talk if you've never done so before).
Talks don't have to be computer-related, or even technical; if it's
interesting, entertaining or pretty, then give it a go! If you don't
feel like giving a talk, don't worry; come along anyway, there's looking
to be a wonderfully varied range of talks.
We'll have a projector and a laptop there to show presentations on, but
if you're using a particularly obscure file format or prefer your own
computer, bring it along.
There will be someone at the Worcester porter's lodge to take you along
to the room!
If you're planning to speak, we'll be having a rather odder-than-usual
"speaker's dinner" beforehand; email me if you want to come.
~~~~~
Also, we have some on-topic announcements. Firstly, Oxford Geek Night 4
is on Thursday next week; it's a great event, come along to it if you
can! See http://oxford.geeknights.net/2007/nov-28th/ for more details.
Secondly, the Oxford University Latin American Society are looking for a
"javascript programmer" for their website (they stress programmer, not
designer) - if you're interested, email me and I'll pass on your details.
Hopefully we'll see you at the lightning talks! Next week, we'll be
having the GM/Christmas Party... more about that then.
Hello, everyone. This week we have the Django talk; read on
for more infos.
The Carbon Account
==================
Speaker: Tom Dyson
Wednesday 14th November, 20:00
Roy Griffiths Room, Keble
Tom Dyson, of Torchbox, will be coming to talk about their in-house
Django project, aimed at helping people cut down on carbon emissions.
He'll delve into the technical aspects of implementing such a
computationally-heavy web application, as well as giving a few general
tips and pointers on this sort of web development.
Meet outside/just inside the Keble Porter's Lodge at 8, and a Very Nice
Compsoc Person will walk you down to the right place.
There's a few bits of other business; the TGM/Party/Possible Movie
Showing has been moved to Monday of 8th, but on the plus side we have a
nice large, posh room now, so I expect you all to come so we can fill it
up! More details on that one closer to the time.
Lightning talks are next week; we're still finalising the venue, but
keep that Thursday free, and if you feel up for the challenge prepare a
small presentation (only 5-10 minutes, or longer if you like!),
otherwise, you can just come and laugh at the rest of us, and our
professional talking skills. It'd be nice if you could email me
(president(a)ox.compsoc.net) if you're planning to give a talk; current
proposals include one about "Windows vs Linux (from a more normal
perspective)", and one on pretty graphing of musical history, and a few
other people who have yet to properly decide!
If you do give a lighting talk, like all our speakers you'll be invited
to a pre-talk dinner. We're not going to pay for everything, but we
might be able to stretch to something... so, even more reason to sit
down and think for a while!
Hopefully I'll see you all on Wednesday!
Hello everyone. Tomorrow is the Bletchley Park trip, and so I have some
final information about it!
We'll be meeting at Gloucester Green bus station (at the X5 stop, bay
11) at 9:55 on Saturday morning.
You'll need around £22 for travel and admission (possibly less), and if
you want to buy lunch there there's a reasonably-priced
cafe.
More details can be found on the website at [1].
Hopefully we'll see plenty of you bright and early (well, for the
weekend) tomorrow!
Hello, everyone.
Firstly, apologies about the website being unavailable earlier in the week.
We've been having some server issues, although everything should be working reasonably well now.
This week we have two events! See below for details.
Telepathy
=========
Thursday 1st November, 20:00
Stafford Crane Room, Keble College
Robert McQueen of Collabora will extol the virtues of Telepathy, the instant messaging
framework used on the Nokia N800, the One Laptop Per Child project, and on a Unix desktop
near you. He'll introduce D-Bus (the IPC system underlying Telepathy), discuss novel uses
of IM (such as collaborative editing and podcast recording) that Telepathy makes feasible,
and will demonstrate how to do useful IM-related things with surprisingly few lines of Python.
There will be someone at the Keble Porters' Lodge to show you to the talk;
this may involve a short wait outside if the porters don't let us keep the door open, but
we'll keep sticking our heads out (quite literally).
Bletchley Park Trip
===================
Saturday 3rd November, 10:00ish
Bletchley Park (meet at Gloucester Green Bus Station)
We plan to go and visit Bletchley Park, one of the homes of modern
cryptography, and home of the World War I codebreaking effort.
We'll be travelling to Bletchley using the bus and train; an exact
timetable will be available shortly, but we'll be catching the X5
from Gloucester Green bus station to Milton Keynes, and then taking
the train from there to Bletchley.
Travel costs should be less than £14, and once we've figured out the
best way to price things up we'll have a more exact figure.
Admission to Bletchley itself is £8, and if you plan to eat at
the cafe there you'll need more money (expect standard
visitor-attraction-cafe prices).
We will probably be leaving around 10ish in the morning (quite likely
the 10:05 bus from gloucester green), and getting to Bletchley around
11:30, and returning sometime in the afternoon.
If you're planning to go on the Bletchley trip, then email me so I
can get some idea of numbers.
Hopefully we'll see you at one or more events this week, they're both
looking to be pretty good ones!
Bear in mind that this is the last week for free admission to
events; from next week, non-members will get charged £2 at the door.
Hello everyone.
Firstly, a talk move. In case you haven't heard, the talk we had
scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday 25th) has been moved to Thursday next
week; you can see the new details about it on the website at [1]. I'll
be emailing around again next week with the summary and location
instructions, as usual.
Secondly, we're going ahead with the Bletchley Park trip, as the
response has been overwhelmingly positive. You can read some initial
information about it at [2]; we'll be getting more accurate info as time
passes. I'll also be elaborating more on this in my next email.
We'll be asking for some idea of numbers for the Bletchley trip; if you
know already you can make it, then please reply to me
(president(a)ox.compsoc.net) saying so.
On a side note, we still have three CompSoc tshirts lying around (one
medium, two large) from our print run over the summer; if you'd like
one, email me.
Finally, someone has written into me asking for information about web
filtering at colleges, so if you have filtering at your college, then
please email me (president(a)ox.compsoc.net) with a few details about it,
and I'll forward it on.
That's it for this week; we're not placing any real demands on you, so
take this opportunity to relax, or do work, or whatever you like.
See you next week!
