Dear CompSoc,
I'm writing to let you know about a meetup that I'm organising for
Digital Health Oxford, on Monday 2nd December at 6pm in the University
Club (on Mansfield Road, OX1 3SZ). I'm a postdoc working in the
Department of Population Health, and …
[View More]have a background in bioinformatics
and medical informatics, and set this group up as I know there are a lot
of exciting projects in this field going on in and around Oxford, and
wanted to provide the opportunity for people to find out what's going
on, to learn from people with complementary skills and experiences, and
to develop new ideas to make Oxford a hub of Digital Health. It is
cross-disciplinary, with developers, clinicians, researchers, engineers,
computer scientists, designers, entrepreneurs, and is also cross sector,
with people from academia, healthcare and industry. There are a lot of
great speakers lined up from both academia and industry, spanning a wide
range of subjects from wearable devices, quantified
self, telehealth, digital-omics, through to workshops on
clinical-focused data systems and architecture.
At the first meetup we'll have talks from Dr Chris Paton from the George
Institute / University of Oxford, who will talk about the Heart Failure
telehealth project he's been working on, and James Turnbull, co-founder
and lead of the dev-team at Incuna who will talk about their experiences
working as a digital healthcare agency with academia and the healthcare
sectors. Following this will be an opportunity to chat with others over
a few drinks either in the University Club, or else at the Kings Arms
just up the road. I'm also working on sponsorship for some drinks at
the event.
It would help with the organisation if people wanting to attend could
sign up at http://www.meetup.com/Digital-Health-Oxford/, else let me
know by email/twitter, or just turn up on the day. If you've any
questions, please get in touch.

*PAID SUMMER WORK IN OXFORD (Graduates & Undergraduates) *
Oxbridge Academic Programs has been running summer study programmes for
advanced secondary school students in Oxford for over 25 years. We have
openings for both undergraduates and graduates.
We are currently looking for undergraduates that are interested in
working as Activities Directors or Program Assistants. We are looking
for out-going students with a sense of fun and the ability to get things
done. Year after year, some of our best people are the same energetic
and enthusiastic individuals who are actively involved in Oxford
University’s clubs and societies.
We are currently also looking for graduate students to teach a wide
variety of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, physical
sciences, and creative arts, including Art History, British History,
Business and Finance, Computer Science, Economics, English Literature,
Gender Studies, Genetics, International Relations, Law, Engineering,
Medical Science, Physics and Social Psychology, among many others. A
comprehensive listing of courses is available online at:
www.oxbridgeprograms.com/academics/courses.php
<http://www.oxbridgeprograms.com/academics/courses.php>.
Our administrative and teaching positions are full-time during the month
of July, with competitive salaries, our students are bright and
enthusiastic and, speaking from past experience, it’s great fun. For
graduate students, it can be a welcome break from the lab or the
library. For undergraduates, it’s a great way to remain in Oxford over
the summer and introduce high school students to the University. We
employ a bright, international faculty and it’s an enjoyable experience
for students and staff alike.
Interested individuals should submit a CV and a covering letter to
Justin Bangs at justin(a)oxbridgeprograms.com
<mailto:justin@oxbridgeprograms.com>. The application deadline is
Monday 3 February 2014. Candidates are encouraged to apply well in
advance of the deadline. Interviews will be held in Oxford during late
February and early March 2014. Our website (www.oxbridgeprograms.com)
contains a great deal of information about what we do and the kind of
experience we try to create, as well as an Employment section.

Subject: Part-time work opportunity for software developer
Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2013 11:42:46 -0500
From: Elliott Verreault <elliott(a)stat.io>
To: <president(a)ox.compsoc.net>
Please forward as you see fit:
---
Software developer, Stat.io - Cambridge or REMOTE
Stat.io is building a web application that lets people use open data to
improve decision-making. Our vision is to aggregate data from hundreds
of open data portals, which can then be …
[View More]accessed in one place. You can
see a demo video of the application
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=1BzbW36o1l4
The challenge is to understand millions of datasets from many different
sources, from APIs to Excel files, and then provide an interface that
allows users to find the data they're interested in.
The main technologies we're using for data processing are Python and
MySQL, with a bit of Redis and MongoDB for some simple queueing and
logging respectively. We're open to using any technologies if it helps
get us closer to our vision. For instance, there's a good chance that
alternative data stores to MySQL would be a better fit for the problems
we face.
We're looking for a software developer to join us, part-time at a
remuneration of £1000/month. If you're interested or have any questions,
get in touch: contact(a)stat.io <mailto:contact@stat.io>.
You can find out more about us on our website: http://www.stat.io/

Thank you very much,
E
