Week 8 Newsletter

Hi everybody! Last week we had Google and that was a very popular and interesting event, particularly the more informal chat over pizza which followed the talk. This week we have the termly general meeting (TGM) which will be an opportunity for YOU to come along and affect what happens next term, and into the future. We will discuss what sorts of things the society should be doing, and of course there will be free pizza. So if you want to have your say and eat some pizza you should come along. Details below. This we we also have an event co-hosted with Entrepreneur First. If you ever wanted to find out what it takes to start your own business, and the soft of people you need to network with, this is the event for you. Details also below. Week 7 Newsletter - Red Gate and Google Events

Hi Everybody! Thanks to everyone who came to the games night. It was probably our best attended event yet with around 40 people coming along, and of course the £500 worth of pizza from BoAML was nice. On Monday (*TOMORROW!*) one of our sponsors, Red Gate, is hosting a talk on real-world software development in the Rewley House Lecture Theatre. Details are below. This week we also have something which we hope will be as popular as last week's event. Google are doing a talk on user privacy, which is obviously an important topic, and with Google being arguably the most important company on the internet their take and expertise on it should be particularly interesting and relevant. Details below. Also this week OxHUG is meeting - this a group of Oxford-based people who use Haskell. It's an opportunity to chat about functional programming in general over a pint. They meet once a month so if you think you might be interested now you should go along on Tuesday and check it out. Nick will give 3 real examples of practical problems that have come up for him as a Googler, and how we try to engineer them to give the best possible result for every user. Oh, and a few ridiculously big numbers, and a bit about Google's amazing work environment :-) Short Bio: Studied Maths & Computation at Oxford and in Compsoc 1995-1998. Since then worked at a research lab, hedge funds and investments banks, and now at Google in London where I'm on the Android team. Access to the building for Games Night

Hi Everyone. When you arrive at the building, the doors may have locked. So if you have sent me your name, or set yourself as "going" to the event and are a compsci, you may have been given swipe card access on your card. When you get to the door, swipe your card and press "1111#" and the door should open. If you haven't got access, call this number: 01865 283599 which rings down into the room were in. Cheers, Sam.

Week 6 Newsletter - Games Night on TUESDAY

Hello all, Hope you all enjoyed the film night and that those of you that went to the Deloitte meal enjoyed that as well. This week we have our first games night of the year, and our first games night outside of Catz! Be there this Tuesday (NB it is has been rescheduled for Tuesday from Wednesday). Details below. Cheers, Pete ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Games and Networking Night With BoAML Technology <http://compsoc.net/termcards/2012/michaelmas/Games_and_Networking_Night_Wit…> Tuesday 13th November, 18:30 Department Of Computer Science - Room 051 *NB:* The date has changed, it will be on Tuesday not Wednesday due to booking constraints. Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoAML) Technology are sponsoring a LAN Party this term, think everything from Team Fortress 2 to Age of Empires, Dota to Starcraft, Unreal Tournaent to Super Moday Night Combat (and many other multiplayer games, open to suggestions). Once again, pizza and refreshments will be provided, and BoAML will be available to talk to as well. The Event will start with a small presentation from BoAML Technology (Around 7pm) including a Q&A Session, Networking and information about a competition to win an iPad 3. There will be people there to answer your questions regarding BoAML for the entire event. Pizza and Drinks will be there. If you plan on attending you will need to bring a laptop with any games you want to play installed and updated - Catz internet will be too slow to download stuff. You will also need a LAN cable and probably a power supply for your laptop. Team Fortess 2 and Super Monday Night Combat are both free to install and play from http://store.steampowered.com/ (you have to install Steam first, though). It is also possible to install TF2 from another computer with it already installed on, we will probably be able to facilitate this but should stress that it is a much better idea to make sure it is installed and up to date beforehand. URGENT: Bod Card Access for Games/Networking Night with BoAML

Hey Everyone, Next week we have the games night sponsored by Bank of America in the Computer Science Building. As it's in the computer science building, we need to arrange a way of getting you guys access to the building. Anyone who marks themselves as "going" in the facebook event (or if you send me an email instead) will have their bod cards allow them access to the building for the evening. So please do this as soon as possible. We will be sending an email to the department around 6pm tonight, so make sure you get this sorted now.
