Sponsor Notices Ensoft CV deadline (Midnight Sun 3rd Mar, 8th Week) -
Software Development Careers
Ensoft develops software that connects the world. The Internet depends
every day on the code we write - it's challenging work that matters. It’s
also fun - excelling at writing complex software is what we enjoy.
We've grown by taking a few of the best Oxbridge graduates each year, and
investing heavily in their training. It's an ideal environment for bright,
creative people who want to develop rapidly. If you bring the computer
science knowledge and coding skills needed to tame Internet-scale complex
systems, you can solve challenging problems as part of a world-class
software engineering team.
This term we are recruiting for graduates.
Our application process is very simple:
- Upload a CV here
<https://ensoft.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8658f71b95ede053e3ff45ea9…>
by midnight on Sunday 8th week (3rd March 2019).
- Interviews (lasting no more than 2 hours) are held on Friday 8th March
at The Saïd Business School, Park End Street, Oxford.
- If successful, you'll have a firm offer quickly.
You can find more details here
<https://ensoft.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8658f71b95ede053e3ff45ea9…>,
or get reminders by following us on Twitter

But I would encourage you to apply soon. Whilst everything is designed to
take up as little of your time as we can, it is still very competitive for
places.

>From PhD to Startup: Oxford
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/from-phd-to-startup-oxford-with-basilio-gent…>
*17:30, Monday, 8th Week, Oxford Foundry*
Doing a PhD or Masters in a technical subject and want to make an impact,
but don't know where to start?
Learn more about the route from academic research to launching your own
startup from founders who have been exactly where you are.
>From PhD to Startup: Oxford is an event run each term by Entrepreneur First
and the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division at Oxford
University.
This time we will be joined by Basilio Gentile, the co-founder and CTO of
Circuit Mind. Circuit Mind is completely automating the design of
electronic circuit boards. Circuit boards are integral to products we use
everyday - from our smartphones to our televisions and microwaves. But no
two boards are the same. Each one is designed to exact specifications that
meet the requirements of devices, which mean they take a huge amount of
time and skill to create. In fact, every year £40bn and 1.5bn hours are
spent globally in tedious and repetitive circuit board design work. Circuit
Mind plans to change that. Basilio is building complex algorithms that take
in the requirements for a circuit board and outputs the circuit board final
design, ready for manufacture. This means better circuits, designed orders
of magnitude faster, at a fraction of the cost.
Before starting this company, Basilio completed a Masters in Control
Systems Engineering, a Masters in Mathematical Modelling and Computation
and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich. His mastery of
high-performance mathematical algorithms for complex systems is what sits
at the core of Circuit Mind’s solution. He turned down postdocs at Harvard
and Berkeley to join Entrepreneur First, where he met his co-founder Tomide
and they created Circuit Mind.
Join us to hear more about Basilio's research and journey. *Please arrive
no later than 5.30pm.*
Pizza and beer are, of course, on us.

*19:00, Wednesday, Week 5, Royal Oak, Woodstock Road*
Gold sponsor TPP is excited to announce a Coding Challenge on Wednesday
13th February, in collaboration with the Oxford Computer Society!
Unlike a typical pub quiz, you'll need to exercise your problem solving
skills to tackle the range of challenges set instead of applying your
general knowledge.
There will be free food and drinks, both soft and alcoholic, available for
attendees throughout the whole event. There will also be great prizes on
offer for the winning teams (Raspberry Pis and a Hotel Chocolat hamper).
We recommend teams of about 5–6 people, but smaller groups are welcome too,
and if you're unsure who to come with then we'll be happy to match you up
with other keen problem solvers on the day.

Hello again again again!!
Oh wow! Everything looks so cosmic!
Coming up, we have a tech talk from HSBC about Agile, which we’re
co-hosting with Oxford Guild. Learn to Code’s advancing to learning about
structures for dealing with sets of data, and another TPP pub quiz is just
a couple of weeks away!
The *Reading University Hackathon society* (“R. U. Hacking?”) is running a
hackathon in a couple of weeks, do check them out!
Details for all these events are below.
Did I mention we have a Discord <https://discord.gg/xA9PFvy>? I wonder if
anyone isn’t on it yet ;)
Triple peace,

*19:00, Saturday, Week 3, UGSA, Department of Computer Science*
Heya all! Geek Night 3’s going to be about taking some language you’ve
never used before! The challenge is to see if you can write a Brainfuck
interpreter. If you’re feeling particularly daring, you could try
interpreting some other language either.
Bring your laptops, we’ll provide the pizza ;)
Tech talk with HSBC: Agile approach in technology
<https://www.facebook.com/events/752099591837028/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 4, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer
Science*
Meet Gez Smith, HSBC’s Global Head of Agile. Agile is the modern approach
to software development, emphasising customer satisfaction, quality and
developer self-organisation. HSBC transferred its development teams to
Agile in 2016 and – combined with fresh investment – has since seen
dramatic improvements in efficiency, productivity and service availability.
Gez has over 13 years experience in agile and Scrum and is a regular
speaker at conferences and user group meet ups in the UK and abroad. He
loves to meet new people and talk agile.
This talk will be of interest to anybody interested in project management
(such as 2nd year CS projects 😉), HSBC’s tech culture and, of course,
HSBC’s many opportunities in tech, from developers to business management.
Free pizza and drinks will be provided after the talk.

An evening of coding and fun.
If you’ve a good idea for a theme, please send it our way!

Coding Pub Quiz with TPP <https://www.facebook.com/events/291827268168511/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 5, Royal Oak, Woodstock Road*
TPP is excited to announce a Coding Challenge on Wednesday 13th February,
in collaboration with the Oxford Computer Society!
Unlike a typical pub quiz, you’ll need to exercise your problem solving
skills to tackle the range of challenges set instead of applying your
general knowledge.
There will be free food and drinks, both soft and alcoholic, available for
attendees throughout the whole event. There will also be great prizes on
offer for the winning teams (Raspberry Pis and a Hotel Chocolat hamper).
We recommend teams of about 5-6 people, but smaller groups are welcome too,
and if you’re unsure who to come with then we’ll be happy to match you up
with other keen problem solvers on the day.
Eventbrite link for tickets
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/coding-pub-quiz-with-tpp-tickets-55505039066…>
Tickets are already fully allocated, so if you can’t make it then please *free

Science*
Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect
and TPP, Silver sponsor Ensoft and bronze sponsor HSBC.
This session will cover *functions* and *modules*, which we can use to
avoid having to repeat code all the time, and allow us to pool several
files into one respectively.
