Halfway Through Trinity: Contests, Ice Cream, Talks!
program greetings
print *, 'heeey CompSoc!'
end program
We're halfway through Trinity! Sadly, this also means it's almost time to bid our goodbyes to event-packed weeks (and hello to our upcoming exams; or goodbye if you're done already, good for you).
Let's mark this halfway checkpoint with a blast of events: a Competitive Programming Contest on Monday; a talk by our sponsor Jump Trading on Tuesday; a G&Ds social (nom) on Wednesday; a talk by one of our former presidents and SWAG officers Hera Brown on Thursday; nothing on friday somehow; and a Learn-to-Code session, a CTF Night, AND a Module Info Session on Saturday!
Good luck on your exams / thesis / projects; and check out an event from our friends over at FLOSS (at the bottom of this newsletter)!
— Acie/Amos, CompSoc Vice President
Fun Computing Fact: Want to build a simple, graphical, working machine that can basically act as a computer and run it on your laptop / desktop / tablet / whatever? Look no further than everyone's (possibly not) favourite slideshow tool: PowerPoint!
Yes, PowerPoint (and actually most slideshow / presentation tools supporting animations on click) is Turing complete*! In fact, there's even a SIGBOVIK<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNjxe8ShM-8> entry about this.<https://tomwildenhain.com/PowerPointTM/Paper.pdf>
Now you know what to make in your free weekends :)
* not guaranteed to be efficient or simple or painless to build a computer in though

Event from Our Friends at FLOSS
[FLOSS talk]
For the next event in our Free, Libre, and Open-Source Software group, Audrey Tang will be giving a talk on Friday 22 May, from 15:30 to 16:30 UK time, in Oxford and online. You're welcome to join (should also be recorded)! https://ox.ogeer.org/event/good-enough-ancestor-software-freedom-as-civic-c…
The topic is "Good Enough Ancestor: Software Freedom as Civic Care across Generations". It will connect the software freedom movement to Audrey's and Caroline Green's framework for local, community-governed, more caring AI systems rather than reliance on centralised systems. Tang and Green work in the local University of Oxford Institute for AI Ethics. Tang is also first Digital Minister of Taiwan, and 2025 Right Livelihood laureate. Before ministership and research, Tang was a prolific FLOSS programmer, and since has for example helped persuade Pol.is to adopt the AGPL license.

Trinity Term Week 3 Newsletter
Icy Week with a Chance of Web, Code, and Movies
<?php echo "Hiya CompSoc!!!"; ?>
Hope everyone found the Week 2 Hackathon and events fun; let's get active in week 3 with our long-awaited ice-skating event with the Invariants!
On Monday, we'll be having our joint ice-skating session; Wednesday, a talk on web development; finishing the week with Saturday: our regular Learn-to-Code session followed by our social with a twist: it's movie night!!
— Acie/Amos, CompSoc Vice President
Fun Computing Fact: Quick DAA/ADS revision check: what's the complexity of the most efficient algorithm for multiplication you can give?
O(n2)? (yikes, go revise!) O(nlog23)? (ohhh Karatsuba, getting there) O(n (log n) (log log n))? (Strassen! Good job!)
What if I told you it's actually possible to do it in O(n log n)? In 2019, David Harvey and Joris van der Hoeven published a paper<https://hal.science/hal-02070778v2/file/nlogn.pdf> that described an algorithm for multiplication in O(n log n) time. The catch? The constant is so large that the algorithm is basically impractical!
These asymptotically fast algorithms with huge impractical constants are called Galactic Algorithms.<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_algorithm>
For all of your (practical/exam) uses, just stick to Karatsuba/Strassen's algorithm... :3

Fun Computing Fact: (Kudos to Oliver Geer for telling me this) If you check the user agent of your browser (anything Chromium / Safari-based, not Firefox though), you would see "KHTML" listed there. Why is that?
It's because the free software organisation KDE (the ones behind tools like Krita and the Plasma desktop environment you may have heard of) are also the ones who developed the HTML engine that most engines use! Apple and then Google both forked this engine and its LGPL license, which is why you see KHTML listed! (for more info, check out KDE's site<https://kde.org/anniversaries/30/#kde-built-the-html-engine-that-powers-mos…>; it's their 30th anniversary!)

Check Out OxWoCS!
