Hello All,
A huge thank you to all those of you who came to the AGM last week and
helped elect the new committee for the next year.
Starting in Trinity the committee will be:
* President - Matthew Burke (3rd Year Physics)
* Secretary - Thomas Denney (1st Year Computer Science)
* Treasurer - Christopher Mullender (3rd Year Physics)
I am looking forward to another year on the committee and working
closely with the new members. I also want to give a huge thank you to
our current President Cameron Alsop and Treasurer James Wallis for their
excellent work over the last year; and to Ex Presidents Joe Fowler and
Sam Lanning, their assistance and knowledge has been essential in
running the society.
We have plenty of space on the committee for new roles, so if there are
any positions that you think the society could benefit from having
please let us know by contacting the committee, either by email at
committee(a)ox.compsoc.net, or by finding one us at any of our events.
Even though we are near to the end of term, we still have some great
talks to go, as well as some more Learn To Code sessions and Geek Nights.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) we have a Tech Talk from Mark Olleson from
Bloomberg on *Super-scale Mobile Applications*
<https://www.facebook.com/events/920225338069355/>, food and drinks will
be provided and we hope to see you there.
*Learn To Code* <https://www.facebook.com/events/771396236329084/> on
Thursday will be providing some challenges for the main group to
practice what they have learnt in the course, and covering Classes and
Object Oriented Programming in the second group.
*Geek Night* <https://www.facebook.com/events/1037106759716236/> will be
on Saturday, join us for games, coding, and pizza.
Next week we are hosting HackCampus for their *Startup Series Talk*
<https://www.facebook.com/events/348988538605069/>, they will be
bringing developers from some exciting companies to talk about and
answer any questions you may have about startups. Free pizza will be
provided.

Programming in the main group, as well as Functions and Modules in the
second group.

Hello All,
Our *Tech Talk* this week will feature Edmund Pringle from Metaswitch
<http://www.metaswitch.com/> will be discussing trust in programming in
*"Can you afford to trust your tools? An undetectable hack (and how to
detect it)"*. Let us know if you plan to attend on our Facebook Event
<https://www.facebook.com/events/585669368246958/>. Food will be
provided after the talk.
*Learn to Code* continues on Thursday after a very successful launch
last week. Due to the huge level of interest we had to turn many people
away, so we will be running two lessons this week; the main course
continuing from where we left off last week, and a repeat of last weeks
lesson for those who could not attend. For the main course priority will
be given to those who attended last week, but at 19:30 any available
spaces will be open to all.
*Geek Night* will be on Saturday. Join us for games, coding, and pizza.
Kind regards,

*Lecture Theatre A - 7:00pm Wednesday (3rd week)*
Edmund Pringle will be joining us from Metaswitch:
Can you afford to trust your tools? An undetectable hack (and how to
detect it).
The goal of this talk is to get you thinking a bit more about what trust
assumptions you’re making when you’re creating software. I’ll cover a
classic and elegant example of abusing those assumptions, and cover
briefly what you can (and can’t) reasonably do to protect yourself. Then
we’ll eat pizza and forget about it all while I pass around a USB stick
with the presentation on it. Just the presentation. Nothing else.
Honest. You can trust me, right?
Learn To Code 2 <https://www.facebook.com/events/1664984350433017/>
*Department of Computer Science - 7:30pm Thursday (3rd week)*
In Session 2, we will be covering various aspects of flow control,
starting with decision-making and simple loops.
Those who attended Session 1 will be in the same rooms and groups as
previously.
For those who couldn't get in last week, good news! We have acquired
enough extra helpers to be able to operate an extra room, which will be
covering last week's material. However, there will be no facility to use
the department's computers in this class - please bring your own laptop
if you can, or find someone to share with.
We will open the doors at 7pm, for a prompt 7:30pm start. In the
unlikely event that we still don't have enough space for everyone who
wants to attend, we may still have to shut the doors, but hopefully the
extra room should be enough.

Hello All,
It was great to see some new faces at Geek Night on Saturday. Due to the
cancellation of the eth1 Hackathon, Geek Night is back on for this
Saturday, we hope to see you all there.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) evening we will be joined by local company
CoreFiling, who will be talking about Docker. This is an exciting new
technology that is worth knowing about for any developer or budding
sysadmin. There will be plenty of *free pizza and drinks* after the
talk, as well as an opportunity to further talk to the speaker about the
topic.
Learn To Code returns on Thursday. Please note that due to unexpected
levels of interest we will be operating on a first-come-first-served
basis for entry. We also ask that everyone who can bring their own
laptop does so, and comes with Python 3 pre-installed so we can dive
straight in. More information and instructions can be found on the

David North and Jay Anslow from local software company CoreFiling will
talk about Docker (https://www.docker.com/), which aims to do for

them, our early work with Docker and our plans for future use.
Learn To Code 1 <https://www.facebook.com/events/1675648589340062/>
*Lecture Theatre B - 7:30pm Thursday (2nd week)*

Hello All,
Unfortunately due to a clash with another event, the eth1 Hackathon has
been cancelled. We hope to rearrange this sometime later this year, so
stay tuned for further news.
Our last email got several event dates and times muddled up, in
particular showing several events tomorrow evening. The only event
tomorrow is Geek Night. The corrected times are below.
Kind regards,
The CompSoc committee

Hello All,
Welcome back, we hope you enjoyed the vacation, and are ready for a new
term packed full of computing events.
We have loads of great events coming this term: The return of Learn to
Code; Geek Nights; Tech Talks from some exciting companies; and even a
12 hour Hackathon (very soon, sign up now). Events are listed on our
Facebook page <https://www.facebook.com/oxcompsoc>, but some upcoming
ones are listed below.
All events are hosted in the Department of Computer Science, and Geek
Nights and Tech Talks include free food and drinks, so don't worry about
missing out on dinner. More details can be found at the bottom of this
email.
We are holding our Annual General Meeting in 6th week, giving all of you
a chance to be part of the future of CompSoc. It is vital that we get
enough members to attend, or vote via proxy, so that we can elect a new
committee for the next year. If you cannot attend in person please
contact the committee to nominate a proxy voter (details below).
We look forward to seeing you,
Kind regards,
The CompSoc commitee

need some knowledge of coding. You can use any language, but we'll
provide some helper libraries in a few common ones. The contest is
entirely technical in nature and you won't need any visual design skills.

More Information
*Geek Nights* are a great chance to meet other geeks and discuss
computing, technology, and just about any other topic you can imagine.
They are nearly every week and open to all. We would love to see some
new faces, so please do pop along.
*Tech Talks* are hour long lectures on technical topic in the field of
computing, that are accessible to anyone with an interest, but don't
require any prior knowledge. They are both interesting, and a great
chance to learn something new.
*Learn to Code* will be running on Thursday evenings, from 19:30-21:30,
in Room 379 of the Department of Computer Science, starting in Week 2.
For the first few sessions, we will be covering programming in Python.
How things proceed after that will depend on what there is interest for
- the survey indicated a fair amount of interest in Java and Web
Development, so depending on numbers and interest, we may do some
sessions on those in later weeks. Sessions are aimed at complete
beginners, so no prior experience is necessarily. We're hoping to be
able to use the computers in Room 379, so hopefully you won't need to
bring anything with you - an update will be posted in plenty of time if
this changes.
