Hello again!
Thinking of CompSoc, you forget everything else.
*Learn to Code* is starting up this coming Friday (and every subsequent Thursday)! If you’re an absolute beginner and want to learn how to code, come to Learn to Code. We’ll be teaching Python, one of the world’s most popular https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2018/07/26/python-is-becoming-the-worlds-most-popular-coding-language programming languages and the perfect place to start coding. The first session has been extremely popular, so make sure to arrive early! This year’s Learn to Code is being generously sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect and TPP and Silver sponsor Ensoft. Join the Learn to Code Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/OXLearnToCode to get updates.
If you already know how to program, we greatly appreciate any time you can spare to help out at our session. Join the Learn to Code Helpers Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/OXLearnToCodeHelpers/ to get more info.
This email’s a bit late as I’ve been competing in some Smash tournaments held by Oxford’s Smash community - ask me about that if you’re interested ;)
By the way, if there’s a Geek Night theme you’d love to see us run - let us know, and we’ll look into it.
Peace,

*19:00, Wednesday, Week 2, UGSA, Department of Computer Science*
There’s no talk scheduled for this Wednesday, so come along to the UGSA and pizza will be provided whilst we all work on problem sheets or whatever people want to do. Learn to Code 1: Getting started with Python https://www.facebook.com/events/392701881464918/?event_time_id=392701894798250
*19:00, Friday, Week 2, Lecture Theatres A and B, Department of Computer Science*
Learn to Code is back! If you’ve ever wanted to learn the basics of programming, refresh your Python knowledge, or get an idea of what computer scientists actually do all day then this is going to be a great course for you 😃.
We aren’t going to assume any prior programming experience, although to get the best out of the sessions we highly recommend that you bring a laptop so that you can follow along with some of the examples. It doesn’t matter whether you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, and in the first session we’ll explain how to get started on any of these platforms.
In this course we are going to be using the programming language Python, which is one of the easiest languages to pick up if you’ve never programmed before. It is widely used in the technology industry – YouTube, NASA, and Wikipedia are just three examples. If you need to learn R at some point during your degree, you may find that an introduction to Python will help you pick up basic computational thinking ideas faster.
We do expect demand to be very high for this course, so please try to arrive before the advertised start time as we need to register everyone (for fire regulations). You’ll need to enter via the back door on Parks Road; there are CompSoc signs up at the department. The course is open to all members of the University of Oxford.
If you’re a CS student with a little spare time and enthusiasm, please consider volunteering by contacting the committee.

*19:00, Saturday, Week 2, UGSA, Department of Computer Science*
Bring your laptop for an evening of relaxing, chatting, games, coding and a selection of food and drink.
If you’d like to suggest themes for our Geek Nights - we’re all ears! Tech talk with CoreFiling: IPv6: are we there yet? https://www.facebook.com/events/383293635790854/
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 3, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer Science*
Abstract pending. Learn to Code 2: Control structures https://www.facebook.com/events/392701881464918/?event_time_id=392718204796619
