Hi everyone!
Now that the dust has settled from Oxford Hack, we’re back to our regularly
scheduled programming. This Wednesday, *CompSoc alumnus David North* will
be visting from silver sponsor *CoreFiling* to talk about some of the
challenges faced in running a small software firm.
On Saturday we’ll be having a *festive Oxmas celebration* in the
department, so be sure to root out your festive jumpers and good tidings!
If you’re interested in the path to entrepreneurship, Bronze sponsor *EF*
are hosting an Open Office next week! Furthermore, Gold sponsor *TPP* are
coming to Oxford for graduate recruitment.
Enjoy the rest of your week!

Events Tech Talk with CoreFiling: What they don’t teach you at university -
software development stories from a small business.
<https://en-gb.facebook.com/events/491386915049239/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 6, LTA, Department of Computer Science*
What happens when you try and put your knowledge into practice with some
real-world programming? How do you deal with code once it’s 15 years old,
or there are over 1 million lines of it? How do you balance the advantages
of new technology against the cost of training a team? And how do you scale
up from one person and their keyboard to a room full of developers working
towards the same goal? Assuming you solve all of that, what do you do when
a customer e-mails four hours before their deadline to say “it’s broken”?
David North, CompSoc alumnus and now Head of Engineering at local software
firm CoreFiling, will attempt to answer the above with some stories from
his 10 years since graduating.
As always, the talk is free for all Oxford students and pizza will be
served afterwards.
Oxmas <https://www.facebook.com/events/2780214702025241/>

*All We Want for Oxmas is you!* (To come to CompSoc on Saturday)
This Saturday’s social event will be themed around Oxmas (Oxford’s classic
festive celebration on the 25th Nov). We’ll have seasonal food, drinks and
music - all you need to bring is festive cheer! Standard Saturday social
activities will also be taking place.

Join us for the G-Research Coding Challenge where you will compete in teams
in a series of progressively difficult challenges. You will be competing in
teams of 2-3 to build a natural language calculation engine (no prior NLP
experience required). The challenges will cover things like evaluation of
arithmetic expressions to unit conversions and equation solving.
We will allocate teams when you arrive, you don’t need to find a team
beforehand - but feel free to bring your own team if you would like. To
take part, you will need to bring at least one laptop per team.
There will be a live leader board up on the projector to give all teams the
opportunity to see where they are placing throughout the challenge. 1st,
2nd and 3rd place (decided by a point system) will win prizes! Following
the event we will provide drinks and canapés and a chance for you to
informally talk with our employees about internships, graduate roles and
life at G-Research.
