Week 2: OUCS Tour, Pubmeet, and Geek Night

Hello everyone, and welcome to Week Two! We have two and (a half; the Geek Nights aren't run by us, but we know the guys who do) events this week, so, read on... OUCS Tour ========= Tuesday 21st October, 17:30 OUCS Somewhat of a CompSoc tradition, we'll be having a tour of OUCS' machine room, with several mostly-willing OUCS people on hand to show you around, answer questions, and suchlike. It's normally a great insight into the bowels of this most important of departments, and offers many great challenges (such as figuring out quite what their naming scheme is). Meet at the main OUCS entrance on Banbury Road for 17:30; there will be a sign up so you know you're at the right place. N.B. You must have a valid University Card with you in order to be admitted to the OUCS Building. Pubmeet ======= Tuesday 21st October, 18:30 (or whenever the tour ends) Lamb and Flag We'll all be meeting up in the Lamb and Flag for another friendly welcome and introduction to the term and society - it's right after the OUCS tour, so just follow us over the road to the L&F. If you're not at the tour, feel There will be someone on the look-out for people in case you can't find us, although we're usually quite easy to spot... Oxford Geek Night 9 =================== Wednesday 22nd October, 19:30 Jericho Tavern The Oxford Geek Night isn't a Compsoc event, but is still worth attending; the event consists of two 15 minute 'keynote' talks, followed by several microslots (normally around 5 minutes each). The event runs at a reasonably relaxed pace, and there's plenty of chance to get a drink from the upstairs bar (note that the whole event is upstairs - don't get confused by the JT looking perfectly normal downstairs that day). Week 1: Freshers' Meet

Hello everyone, Thanks for signing up to CompSoc's freshers' fair mailing list - it's great to have your interest, and we hope you'll enjoy our events this term. The first event, as those of you who took some paper from us will know, is the Freshers' Meet: Freshers' Meet -------------- Thursday 16th October (Thursday 1st Week), 19:00 Prestwich Room, St John's College The Freshers' Meet is your chance to come along and meet the current committee and current members, and find out more about what we do, as well as enjoy some of the free food and drink we'll be putting on. It starts at 7pm but we'll be there all evening, so feel free to pop in and say hello if you're around later. The room will be signposted from the St John's Porters' Lodge, and one of us will be there at the start to say hello as well. I hope to see you there; if you want to sign up to CompSoc, we'll have membership forms on hand, and if you took one at the Fair you can hand it in there and then (preferably with the money, but you can always pidge that to us). Remember, all of the events from now until 4th week are free for non-members, so come along and enjoy them! Hello, ex-freshers, and other people who found us at the Fair last term! The other is by Rebellion, a local games development company. They'll be giving a talk about what they do, who they deal with, and where they think games are headed. Week 8: TGM/'Christmas Party'

Well, we enter the final week of term, and as things wind down we have one event left! TGM and Christmas Party ======================= Monday 26th November, 20:00 Oscar Wilde Room, Magdalen The Termly General Meeting, the pinnacle of democracy. We'll go over the term, make sure everything is in order, check our Treasurer hasn't fled to a foreign country with CompSoc's fortune, and hopefully get it over with in a reasonably short amount of time (I believe the record is around 4 minutes). After that's over, we'll be having a small Christmas party, with some free food and whatever else we can think of - suggestions, games, or whatever are more than welcome! There will be someone at the Magdalen porter's lodge to guide you over to the room. However, the glorious Compsoc is not the only organisation who gather people into rooms in Oxford. Oxford Geek Night 4 is this week! Oxford Geek Night 4 =================== Wednesday 28 November, 19:30 Upstairs, Jericho Tavern Oxford Geek Nights offer a chance for web developers and designers in the local area to get together, share their skills and talk about new ideas, techniques and technologies. This fourth OGN will consist of two keynote talks of 15 minutes each, followed after a healthy period of socialising including two sets of 5-minute long microslot sessions. You can see details of the talks at http://oxford.geeknights.net/2007/nov-28th/ I highly recommend it, being a web-type myself, but it's really interesting even if you haven't been consumed by CSS, AJAX and Web 2.0. Week 7: Lightning! Talks!

It's week 7, and time for an event! Shocking... read on for more. Lightning Talks =============== Thursday 22nd November, 20:00 Morley Fletcher Room, Worcester One room, one projector, and many speakers. Everyone is invited to give a short talk on something they're involved in or interested in; don't worry if you don't like public speaking, you're more than welcome to watch the rest of us screw it up (although, of course, this would be a great place to give a talk if you've never done so before). Talks don't have to be computer-related, or even technical; if it's interesting, entertaining or pretty, then give it a go! If you don't feel like giving a talk, don't worry; come along anyway, there's looking to be a wonderfully varied range of talks. We'll have a projector and a laptop there to show presentations on, but if you're using a particularly obscure file format or prefer your own computer, bring it along. There will be someone at the Worcester porter's lodge to take you along to the room! If you're planning to speak, we'll be having a rather odder-than-usual "speaker's dinner" beforehand; email me if you want to come. ~~~~~ Also, we have some on-topic announcements. Week 6: The Carbon Account (Web Development with Django)

Hello, everyone. This week we have the Django talk; read on for more infos. The Carbon Account ================== Speaker: Tom Dyson Wednesday 14th November, 20:00 Roy Griffiths Room, Keble Tom Dyson, of Torchbox, will be coming to talk about their in-house Django project, aimed at helping people cut down on carbon emissions. He'll delve into the technical aspects of implementing such a computationally-heavy web application, as well as giving a few general tips and pointers on this sort of web development. Meet outside/just inside the Keble Porter's Lodge at 8, and a Very Nice Compsoc Person will walk you down to the right place. There's a few bits of other business; the TGM/Party/Possible Movie Showing has been moved to Monday of 8th, but on the plus side we have a nice large, posh room now, so I expect you all to come so we can fill it up! More details on that one closer to the time. Lightning talks are next week; we're still finalising the venue, but keep that Thursday free, and if you feel up for the challenge prepare a small presentation (only 5-10 minutes, or longer if you like!), otherwise, you can just come and laugh at the rest of us, and our professional talking skills. It'd be nice if you could email me (president(a)ox.compsoc.net) if you're planning to give a talk; current proposals include one about "Windows vs Linux (from a more normal perspective)", and one on pretty graphing of musical history, and a few other people who have yet to properly decide! If you do give a lighting talk, like all our speakers you'll be invited to a pre-talk dinner. We're not going to pay for everything, but we might be able to stretch to something... so, even more reason to sit down and think for a while! Hopefully I'll see you all on Wednesday!
