Jane Street's Upcoming Tech Talks
You are invited to attend the following talks:
Tuesday, October 12th 2021
17:00-18:00 BST / 18:00-19:00 CEST
*Title: Feedback Directed Optimization for OCaml*
*Speaker: Greta Yorsh*
Overview:
OCamlFDO is a tool that uses information about frequently-executed program
parts to guide compile-time optimization decisions. Code layout
optimization is a classic example of why this information is useful, how
hardware and compilers interact, and how (not to) measure performance. In
this talk, we will explore the design of OCamlFDO and how it was influenced
by practical needs to fit in with different built systems, developers'
workflows, and the open-source compiler itself.
Speaker Bio:
Greta Yorsh works on OCaml compiler here at Jane Street, having previously
worked on GCC compiler at ARM. She is passionate about low-level
optimizations that present the combined challenges of ensuring correctness
and achieving the best possible performance on modern hardware. She studied
Computer Science at Tel Aviv University and has been involved in several
academic and industrial research projects in the areas of software
verification, program synthesis, and superoptimization.
Thursday, October 14th 2021
17:00-18:00 BST / 18:00-19:00 CEST
*Title: Algorithmic challenges in build systems and incremental computation*
*Speaker: Andrey Mokhov*
Overview:
Build systems are used by every software developer on the planet, but they
are far from being a solved problem. For years the venerable Make
dominated, but more recently the challenges of scale have driven large
software firms to develop their own build systems, such as Google's Bazel
or Facebook's Buck. Jane Street is not as large, but we are not in
exception; in fact, we developed not one, but two build systems! In this
talk, you'll learn about the build system called Dune and about the
incremental computation library that powers it. As an example of a tricky
algorithmic problem that we recently needed to solve, we'll look at
concurrent cycle detection in build graphs comprising millions of nodes.
Speaker bio:
Andrey Mokhov works in Jane Street's build systems team, trying to keep our
build times under control despite the rapidly growing population of
software developers. Before joining Jane Street, he was an academic
researcher at Newcastle University (UK), working on asynchronous circuits,
functional programming, and build systems.
Please RSVP to either, or both of these talks using the link below by
Sunday 10th October at 23:59 BST.
Final information including dial in details will be sent on Monday 11th
October.
Jane Street is currently actively recruiting for our 2022 Summer Internship
in Software Engineering. To find out more and apply. Click here

Hey everyone,
Attached are the minutes from our Trinity 2021 TGM. I hope you’ll all
welcome our newly elected committee:
* Lize Alberts - President
* Kinga Mastej - Secretary
* Pavol Kollar - Treasurer
We also passed a couple of important motions:
* We’ve lowered our membership sign-up fee to £1.
* CompSoc has merged with the Hackathon Society and thus will be
hosting Oxford Hack for the foreseeable future.
See the minutes for more details on these decisions.
This is probably the last email you’ll get from me, and I’m sure I speak
for all of us when I say that we’ve thoroughly enjoyed being your
committee. Moving online was certainly an adventure and we’re thankful
to our members for keeping CompSoc active along with us.
It sounds like the new committee has some great stuff planned for next
year so stay tuned,
/- Matthew and the rest of the (ex-)committee!/

Hey everyone,
It looks like we’ve escaped exams for now, which means it’s time for our
most important event, our Termly General Meeting (TGM). Crucially, we’ll
be re-running elections for spots on next year’s committee, so be sure
to consider which role might suit you! More details below about what
each member of the committee contributes to the society. Any member of
CompSoc, including freshers, is welcome (and encouraged!) to run for a
position on the committee. See the attached agenda for other motions
we’ll be discussing in the TGM.

*18:00, Saturday, Discord*
Come and hear what’s been going on behind the scenes at the society, and
make your voice heard! The agenda for the meeting is attached.
We’ll be electing our new committee at this TGM. The positions available
currently are:
* *President* - Runs the society and is in charge of the committee, as
well as obtaining/renewing sponsorships.
* *Vice President* - Largely similar responsibilities to the
President, helps the President run the society and communicate with
sponsors.
* *Secretary* - Writes the newsletters and manages CompSoc’s website
and server, as well as signing up new members and writing the
agendas/minutes for meetings.
* *Social Secretary* - A relatively new role, in charge of organising
events and managing our social media.
* *Treasurer* - In charge of CompSoc’s bank account and payments made
to/from the society.
Of course, the duties of each role grow and change over time, so you’re
welcome to arrange the details with your fellow committee members. If
you’re interested in running for a role, or just want to vote on who you
want in the new committee, be sure to show up and help us move our
society forward!

Hey everyone,
You’re probably sick of hearing the same thing from me by now, but we’re
having another chill evening with no set theme this Saturday amidst the
exam season. After the exams are over we’ll also be re-running the
elections for our committee members. We can’t be your committee forever,
so we encourage you to consider running for a role! We’ve also got a
message from TPP Careers this week. See you soon, and good luck in your
exams!

Hey everyone,
As you all know by now we’ve all got exams and/or revision filling up
our lives. We’ll be having another chill social this Saturday, but will
it be MORE or LESS chill than the last two chill socials? Only you can
decide. After the exams are over we’ll be re-running the elections for
our committee members. Not that we don’t enjoy being your committee, but
we can’t do it forever! We’ve also got a message from TPP Careers this
week. Avid readers may notice that we’ve now broken what might be the
longest streak of non-sponsored messages in my time on the committee.
Exciting!

Hey everyone,
Our social this Saturday will again just be a relaxing social evening in
light of the fact that most of us are facing exams soon. Don’t forget
that after the exams are over we’ll be re-running the elections for our
committee members. It’s a great opportunity that’s well worth
considering if you want to bulk out your CV! No sponsor messages this
week either, so that’s all from us.

Hey everyone,
This week has been busy for our committee so apologies for the
newsletter being later than usual. Our social this Saturday has no set
theme, just a chill social evening ahead of the exams most of us are
facing soon. Also attached to this newsletter are the minutes from our
AGM last term, which it came to my attention that I forgot to send out
after the meeting. No sponsor messages this week, so that’s all from us!

Hey everyone,
Our next social event this Saturday is Movie Night! Head on down to
Discord on Saturday night and we’ll all vote on a movie to watch, over
pizza of course. We had some suitably wacky bots fighting to overwrite
each other in Core War last week, and I think it’s fair to say that the
dwarf meta reigned supreme this time around. We’ve actually don’t have
any sponsor messages this week which is a rarity. See you all next week!
