Fun Computing Fact: Quick DAA/ADS revision check: what's the complexity of the most efficient algorithm for multiplication you can give?
O(n2)? (yikes, go revise!) O(nlog23)? (ohhh Karatsuba, getting there) O(n (log n) (log log n))? (Strassen! Good job!)
What if I told you it's actually possible to do it in O(n log n)? In 2019, David Harvey and Joris van der Hoeven published a paperhttps://hal.science/hal-02070778v2/file/nlogn.pdf that described an algorithm for multiplication in O(n log n) time. The catch? The constant is so large that the algorithm is basically impractical!
These asymptotically fast algorithms with huge impractical constants are called Galactic Algorithms.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_algorithm
For all of your (practical/exam) uses, just stick to Karatsuba/Strassen's algorithm... :3
