Hi all,
The term is over and I hope you're enjoying a relaxing vacation/the

Sadly, this will be my final email as President. I've been grateful for

Seymour, Joe Gardiner and Ben Slater). I'm sure the new committee will
enjoy their roles as much as I have and I look forward to the new things
they'll bring.

Doing a PhD or Masters in a technical subject and want to make an impact,
but don’t know where to start?
Learn more about the route from academic research to launching your own
startup from founders who have been exactly where you are.
>From PhD to Startup: Oxford is an event run each term by Entrepreneur First
and the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division at Oxford
University.
This time we will be joined by Basilio Gentile, the co-founder and CTO of
Circuit Mind. Circuit Mind is completely automating the design of
electronic circuit boards. Circuit boards are integral to products we use
everyday - from our smartphones to our televisions and microwaves. But no
two boards are the same. Each one is designed to exact specifications that
meet the requirements of devices, which mean they take a huge amount of
time and skill to create. In fact, every year £40bn and 1.5bn hours are
spent globally in tedious and repetitive circuit board design work. Circuit
Mind plans to change that. Basilio is building complex algorithms that take
in the requirements for a circuit board and outputs the circuit board final
design, ready for manufacture. This means better circuits, designed orders
of magnitude faster, at a fraction of the cost.
Before starting this company, Basilio completed a Masters in Control
Systems Engineering, a Masters in Mathematical Modeling and Computation and
a PhD in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich. His mastery of
high-performance mathematical algorithms for complex systems is what sits
at the core of Circuit Mind’s solution. He turned down postdocs at Harvard
and Berkeley to join Entrepreneur First, where he met his co-founder Tomide
and they created Circuit Mind.
Join us to hear more about Basilio’s research and journey. *Please arrive
no later than 5.30pm.*
Pizza and beer are, of course, on us.

Outside Events DSTL 2019 Fire Hack
*We have the following message to relay from the 2019 Fire Hack Team:*
Hi CompSoc,
We’re inviting students to an international Hackathon to develop new ways
of using drones to fight wildfires. We feel you and your society will be
interested in this event and could excel in the hackathon. On 29th-31st
March in Southampton join us for the Swarm and Search AI Challenge and
support the emergency services to develop new ways of using drones to fight
wildfires.
Over the course of the weekend there will be a series of three heats and
the overall winners of the hackathon will be invited to the US – travel and
accommodation paid for – to demonstrate their winning concepts and ideas
for future development at a special event at the British Embassy, as well
as being recognised at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems
International Expo 2019.
This is a unique opportunity for you and the society to solve real
(potentially lifesaving) applications. The CAA have strict regulations on
flying multiple air vehicles so this really is the first step to getting
swarms airborne. Alongside the hacking this will be an entertaining
weekend, with free food and break out games and challenges. Industry
participants and experts in drone and autonomy technology will be available
to offer advice on how to progress your idea and career.
We’re asking if you could share this challenge: It will be a hackathon
they’ll enjoy and could be a career changing event for them. But more
importantly, successful solutions could be moved onto physical platforms
that could potentially save lives. For more information please visit our
Devpost page or reply to this email. This is a ticketed event and numbers
are limited so register for a free ticket at Eventbrite.
Kind regards,

Systems Engineering, a Masters in Mathematical Modelling and Computation
and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich. His mastery of
high-performance mathematical algorithms for complex systems is what sits
at the core of Circuit Mind’s solution. He turned down postdocs at Harvard
and Berkeley to join Entrepreneur First, where he met his co-founder Tomide
and they created Circuit Mind.
Join us to hear more about Basilio's research and journey. *Please arrive
no later than 5.30pm.*
Pizza and beer are, of course, on us.

Twelve vigintillion and seven greetings upon this finest hour,
*Congratulations on making it through 5th week!*
We are just two weeks away from the *committee elections* at the AGM! If
you're interested in a committee role – of any kind – feel free to
email/speak to any of us to find out what it involves. As a committee
member, you get to be involved with a huge variety of events with some of
the world's largest tech companies. It's a fun and rewarding experience
(and not just through having something to put on your CV).
Also, if you have any motions for the AGM, send me an email and I'll add it
to the agenda (attached).
Wednesday sees Silver sponsor *Ensoft* giving a talk on cloud-scale data
centres!
In Week 7, St Andrews CompSoc's hackathon returns with a 8-bit theme.
Edinburgh University is also hosting HackTheBurgh 2019 in the Easter vac.
All the hackathons!
Details for all these events (and more!) are below.
Also attached are the slides from last week's "IPv6: Are we there yet?"
talk, kindly provided by CoreFiling.
X-tuple greetings for arbitrarily large X,
*Joe G and the rest of the committee*

accessible view into these creations, including how networking is evolving
to enable them.
Bio: Simon Chatterjee is a Director and CTO of Ensoft, whose experience
includes helping to bring into existence the Guinness Book of Records'
"World's Highest Capacity Internet Router".
Pizza and drinks will also be provided.

Democracy hype! As the new term passes, the society turns over a new leaf.
The 2019–2020 CompSoc executive committee is about to get elected. If
you're interested in all that but would like more information on what our
roles are, drop us an email and we'll explain everything you want to know.
If you'd like to introduce more, non-executive roles, please send us an
email so we can add it to the agenda.
This year will likely see a committee where nobody on committee was on
previously - a full replacement. However, we'll still be on hand to provide
help if needed and we have written handover docs as well.
We'll also be voting on approving the minutes of meetings from the previous
TGM, and any other things people propose to the agenda. If there's anything
you'd like to see on the minutes, send it our way.
There will also be the usual committee reports and pizza.
The official agenda is attached. If you want to submit any other motions,
email us to add them to the agenda.

Joe Gardiner
Secretary - Oxford University Computer Society
secretary(a)ox.compsoc.net
Hello again again!
Gee! All of a sudden, you can see right through yourself.
We'd like to wish a warm welcome to *HSBC* as a *new Bronze CompSoc
sponsor!* Celebrations all round.
Coming up in these next two weeks, we have talks from CoreFiling, and
Bronze sponsor HSBC the following week. This coming Saturday, we'll be
writing Brainfuck interpreters in a languages we haven't used before!
Double peace,

Events Tech talk with CoreFiling: IPv6: are we there yet?
<https://www.facebook.com/events/383293635790854/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 3, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer
Science*
CompSoc sysadmins of the early 21st century, David North and Stephen White,
will talk about IPv6: now that we've "run out" of IPv4 addresses, how is
adoption of the new version going? Are businesses, academia and residential
users queuing up to embrace the future? Or were the predictions of problems
wildly over-hyped and we're all getting along fine as we are?
Pizza will be provided after the talk.
Learn to Code 2: Control structures
<https://www.facebook.com/events/392701881464918/?event_time_id=392718204796…>
*19:00, Thursday, Week 3, Lecture Theatres A and B, Department of Computer
Science*
Learn to Code is back! If you've ever wanted to learn the basics of
programming, refresh your Python knowledge, or get an idea of what computer
scientists actually do all day then this is going to be a great course for
you 😃.
We aren't going to assume any prior programming experience, although to get
the best out of the sessions we highly recommend that you bring a laptop so
that you can follow along with some of the examples. It doesn't matter
whether you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, and in the first session we'll
explain how to get started on any of these platforms.
In this course we are going to be using the programming language Python,
which is one of the easiest languages to pick up if you've never programmed
before. It is widely used in the technology industry – YouTube, NASA, and
Wikipedia are just three examples. If you need to learn R at some point
during your degree, you may find that an introduction to Python will help
you pick up basic computational thinking ideas faster.
We do expect demand to be very high for this course, so please try to
arrive before the advertised start time as we need to register everyone
(for fire regulations). You'll need to enter via the back door on Parks
Road; there are CompSoc signs up at the department. The course is open to
all members of the University of Oxford.
If you're a CS student with a little spare time and enthusiasm, please
consider volunteering by contacting the committee.
Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect
and TPP, Silver sponsor Ensoft and bronze sponsor HSBC.
This week's session will cover how to make your code make decisions, and
explain some ways to make loops.

<https://www.facebook.com/events/138417413750645/?event_time_id=138417430417…>
*19:00, Saturday, Week 3, UGSA, Department of Computer Science*
Heya all! Geek Night 3's going to be about taking some language you've
never used before! The challenge is to see if you can write a Brainfuck
interpreter. If you're feeling particularly daring, you could try
interpreting some other language either.
Bring your laptops, we'll provide the pizza ;)
Tech talk with HSBC: Agile approach in technology
<https://www.facebook.com/events/752099591837028/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 4, Lecture Theatre A, Department of Computer
Science*
Meet Gez Smith, HSBC's Global Head of Agile. Agile is the modern approach
to software development, emphasising customer satisfaction, quality and
developer self-organisation. HSBC transferred its development teams to
Agile in 2016 and – combined with fresh investment – has since seen
dramatic improvements in efficiency, productivity and service availability.
Gez has over 13 years experience in agile and Scrum and is a regular
speaker at conferences and user group meet ups in the UK and abroad. He
loves to meet new people and talk agile.
This talk will be of interest to anybody interested in project management
(such as 2nd year CS projects 😉), HSBC's tech culture and, of course,
HSBC's many opportunities in tech, from developers to business management.
Free pizza and drinks will be provided after the talk.
Learn to Code 3: Compound Data Structures

Science*
Learn to Code is kindly sponsored by Gold sponsors JP Morgan Tech Connect
and TPP, Silver sponsor Ensoft and bronze sponsor HSBC.
This session will be on compound data structures: mostly *lists*, and also
*sets*, *tuples* and *dictionaries*.

Science*
TPP will be in Lecture Theatre A in the Department of Computer Science,
Wolfson Building on Wednesday 16th January from 7 pm until 9 pm.
*Free pizza and soft drinks will be provided for all attendees!*
This talk will be an exploration of the changing landscape of digitally
enhanced patient care. We’ll assess how future developments will improve
outcomes for patients and clinicians, taking a look at some of the recent
exciting developments that enable us to tailor medical decisions,
interventions and treatments to individuals. From early diagnosis to
empowering patients to take control of their own health, medical technology
holds the power to improve healthcare and save lives.
TPP provides software to the NHS to join up patient records from any care
setting to make healthcare delivery more effective and efficient. Over
200,000 users in 7,000 NHS organisations use TPP's SystmOne software to
access almost 50 million patient records. TPP provides the technology to
enable our National Health Service to be the world-leading care
