Hi everyone!
Welcome back to Oxford! It’s a quiet week this week, with *no Tech Talk on
Wednesday*. On Saturday we have our first social of the term: *Board Game
Night*! It’s certain to be an absolute blast so make sure to pop down for a
game!
If you’re interested in *learning programming* then our beginner-friendly
course *Learn to Code* is returning in Week 2! This is *free* and open to
all students of the university (you don’t have to be a member), so come and
check it out if you’d like to get started learning Python. We're also keen
to take on volunteers for the sessions, so if you have any experience in
Python and are interested in helping out please let us know!
Looking much further ahead, we’ll be hosting *Flash Talks* in Week 7.
Everyone is encouraged to give a 5-10 minute talk on an area of their
(computing) interest. This could be anything from a project you’ve been
working on to a piece of technology you find interesting! If you’re at all
interested in getting involved then do get in touch with the committee, as
this is a great way to talk about something you’re passionate about in a
relaxed and supportive environment.
Finally, please find attached the minutes for last term’s TGM.
See you on Saturday!

important democratic event is taking place first: the CompSoc Termly
General Meeting. Please do come along if you’d like to know more about how
the society is run. If you’d like to change something about the society
then let me know and we can put together a motion.
Have a splendid Week 8!

Events Tech Talk with CoreFiling: What they don’t teach you at university -
software development stories from a small business.
<https://en-gb.facebook.com/events/491386915049239/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 6, LTA, Department of Computer Science*
What happens when you try and put your knowledge into practice with some
real-world programming? How do you deal with code once it’s 15 years old,
or there are over 1 million lines of it? How do you balance the advantages
of new technology against the cost of training a team? And how do you scale
up from one person and their keyboard to a room full of developers working
towards the same goal? Assuming you solve all of that, what do you do when
a customer e-mails four hours before their deadline to say “it’s broken”?
David North, CompSoc alumnus and now Head of Engineering at local software
firm CoreFiling, will attempt to answer the above with some stories from
his 10 years since graduating.
As always, the talk is free for all Oxford students and pizza will be
served afterwards.

Hi all,
We’ve got a great Tech Talk coming up this week, with Gold sponsor *Stripe*.
It’s a great opportunity to see how some of the programming theory you
might learn at university is applied in practice.
We’re taking a break from socials this weekend, as CompSoc is heading to
Oxford Hack! If you’re taking part, you might want to have a go at winning
our prize category: Most Useless Hack! We’ll be back next weekend for some
Oxmas celebrations, including a meal out before the usual festivities in

Events Building For Scale: How and Why Stripe Built Sorbet, a Type Checker
for Ruby <https://www.facebook.com/events/525960254903304/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 5, LTA, Department of Computer Science*
Stripe builds the economic infrastructure for the Internet. Each year we
handle billions of dollars on behalf of Internet businesses — and most of
the logic for handling that money is written in Ruby. Ruby’s dynamic types
made for high initial developer velocity, but over time as the codebase
grew that same feature became a hindrance. With millions of lines of code
already written and hundreds of engineers writing more each day, Stripe
decided to create a fast, gradual typechecker for Ruby, called Sorbet.
Come hear about the process of developing Sorbet, some of the problems it
seeks to solve, and some perspective on types and programming language
design from an industry perspective.

Tech Talk with Cisco: The Apollo Guidance Computer
<https://www.facebook.com/events/505274646717486/>
*19:00, Wednesday, Week 1, UGSA, Department of Computer Science*
Half a century ago, on 20 July 1969, Neil Armstrong was in the final stages
of the lunar descent, just a few thousand feet above the surface, when
suddenly his onboard computer indicated a critical alarm. For three
nail-biting seconds it looked as if the mission would have to be aborted.
However, Armstrong was given a “go” to continue, and after several more
alarms the Eagle touched down safely on the Moon.
Robert Wills will introduce the amazing hardware and software that made up
the Apollo Guidance Computer, walk you through the landing procedure
step-by-step, and talk about the pioneering design principles that were
used to make the landing software robust against any failure. He will also
explain the problems that occurred during the Apollo 11 landing, and show
you how the Apollo Guidance Computer played its part in saving the mission.
Robert Wills works as an engineer for Cisco in Harpenden, writing software
for the highly reliable routers that form the core of the internet. In his
spare time, he has a keen interest in the history of computing, and
particularly enjoys talking about how computers were actually used, the
users and the technical aspects. He has been fascinated by the Apollo
Guidance Computer for ten years, and is still learning new things about
this extraordinary machine.
