Hello Everyone!
This newsletter is a little later than usual because there were a few
things which needed to be sorted out beforehand, sorry about that.
Before we dive into events, the CompSoc website now has an *ICS*
calendar file you can import into your calendar software to have all of
our events automatically appear: http://ox.compsoc.net/events.ics
Whenever we change details on our website, this file will also change,
and hopefully the change should be reflected in your calendar software too!
This week we have one of our sponsors *G Research* holding a coding
competition, it will be on Wednesday evening, and as usual pizza and
refreshments will be included.
We also have the second *Learn to Code with OE* event that will be held
on Sunday 3rd November, the details are yet to be added to the website,
the above calendar file and facebook, but will be in due course.
Here are the full gory details of all the events excluding the OE one,
see you later this week!

Algorithmic Trading challenge: Can your code beat the markets?
Test your coding skills trading fake money and win real prizes.
G-Research has developed a simulated stock exchange where you can trade
your strategies in competition with other teams. Whose will make the
most money by the end of the session?
You'll be split into teams, given a brief overview of the system and
then have 60 minutes to write your code (in C# - syntax help available)
to trade on our simulated exchange. After that development time, your
code will run in competition with the other teams and the team which
makes the most money will win a £20 Amazon gift voucher for each member.
Please join us on *Wednesday 30th October* in *The Undergraduate Social
Area, at The Department of Computer Science* at *6pm*. The session will
be followed by pizza and refreshments. We will have some of our software
developers on hand to answers questions.

About Learn to Code
During these events, there will be a mixture of interactive workshops
and talks. We will be teaching you the basics of programming
using Python <http://www.python.org/>. These events are good if you have
zero coding experience, but they are also valuable if you already have
started coding and would like to better your skills. We also welcome
people who already have good coding experience as the more volunteers
the better!
These events are always followed by our weekly Geek Night
<http://ox.compsoc.net/events/tags/geek_night/>.
You can find out more information about this series of events over
at ox.compsoc.net/learn <http://ox.compsoc.net/learn/>
We also have a facebook group for discussion if you are taking part in
this course: fb.com/groups/OXLearnToCode

Hey Everyone,
Just a very quick reminder about tonight's event (in case you missed
it). Morgan Stanley will be talking about open source and enterprise
software (and how companies like Morgan Stanley contribute to the open
source community), after which they will be buying pizza for everyone,
and offering to take us all to the pub.
Hope to see many of you there tonight! =)
Morgan Stanley: Open source and the enterprise

Date: Wednesday Week 2 - 23 October 2013 Time: 06:30 PM Facebook Event

<http://ox.compsoc.net/events/tags/corporate/> Talk
<http://ox.compsoc.net/events/tags/talk/>
/Note: This event will include pizza and Morgan Stanley will be taking
everyone for drinks afterwards./
This session looks at what it means to be "Enterprise" software: how
open-source can help in large organisations, and vice versa: where are
the benefits in organisations contributing to open-source, using Morgan
Stanley's contributions to open-source as examples. Specific ideas are
presented around how to make software more enterprise friendly, and how
to build an open-source community.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you to everyone who signed up to our mailing list during freshers'
fair. This is the first of a weekly newsletter you will receive. You can
unsubscribe from this list at any time via our website.
First point to make is that we also run a "jobs" mailing list (
http://ox.compsoc.net/members/mailing_lists/), we get a large number of
job advertisement requests (thing freelance work, internal Oxford work,
graduate / internship opportunities etc...), and we will not spam you
with these, but if you are interested in receiving these kind of emails,
feel free to sign up to this list.
Second thing is Events!
This week we have the legendary Jon Skeet (
http://stackoverflow.com/users/22656/jon-skeet, *person with the most
reputation in ALL of Stack Overflow*, and author of C# in depth) from
Google coming to give a talk about what it's like to work there.
We also have our first Learn to Code event, all details below.
We look forward to seeing you at our events, if you are interested in
becoming a member, bring £5 with you to the events and we will have
membership signup sheets! =)

Abstract
Being an engineer at Google is a fantastic experience. Most people know
about some of our perks such as free food and fabulous offices - but
what's the work like? How does it compare with other environments? I've
been at Google for just over five years, with about ten years of
industry experience before that, so I've seen a bit of both sides. In
this talk I'll try to address four questions:
* What challenges are particular to Google (and other companies of
similar scale) which don't affect most environments?
* What challenges faced by smaller companies simply aren't a problem
at Google?
* Where does software engineering still have significant issues which
hurt everyone, regardless of scale?
* How can you get ahead of the game as a software engineer?

science from "the other place."

Hello Everyone!
Welcome back to Oxford! We hope you have had a great summer, and are
well refreshed ready for the year ahead. And we hope those of you not in
studying any more have a great summer none the less and are settling
into your careers nicely.
First things first, we have a new website!!! You can check it out at:
http://ox.compsoc.net/. There is still lots of work that needs to be
done to it, but we have made that oh-so-difficult leap to actually
implementing enough of it to switch over.
Second thing, Events!
This term is set to be a big one! With 3 events per week, we have plenty
to keep you on your toes. Along with our usual wednesday evening events,
we have our weekly "Geek Nights" which proved a success last year, and
we're introducing a "Learn to Code" Course which will be held directly
before the Geek Nights.
You can see the full termcard here:

Hi Everyone,
We hope you have had a good term, and attended enough CompSoc events!
We've certainly had a great time, with the Facebook hackathon, Rebellion
Games Games Night, Dionach Capture the Pi Challenge and talk from
GreenQloud, along with our weekly geek nights. As many of you are aware,
we were originally going to plan for a Cocktails night this term, but we
have taken the decision, due to the looming exams and revision, to
cancel this event, and we will be hosting no further mid-week events for
the rest of term.
We will however continue hosting our Saturday Geek Nights! So come on
down if you need an escape from exams, or anything else for that matter!
And for everyone sitting exams, good luck!!!
For anyone who is yet to join it, here is the official Oxford University
CompSoc group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/oxcompsocgeeknight/

Hi Everyone!
This week we have a really cool event lined up! Dionach (a white-hat pen
testing company based on the outskirts of our fine city) are coming in
with a load of raspberry pi's set up with particular vulnerabilities.
They will talk a bit about particular vulnerabilities and get teams of
people to try and break into them remotely. This is definitely an event
you will want to come down to!
Also, this week, we have a competition running, organised by our
secretary Greg:
> CompSoc is having mini competition to see who can make the best Sevens
> playing program! Will happen around 7-10pm next Saturday evening in
> the social area.
>
> At some point that evening submit to me a Java .class file which
> implements the following interface. Anything goes except reflection,
> returning invalid moves, or causing the simulation to hang! :P
>

The actual running of the competition will happen during our next weekly
geek night. Hope to see many of you there!
Here are the full details for Wednesday's event:
Capture the Pi Challenge - Workshop with Dionach
<http://ox.compsoc.net/termcards/2013/trinity/Capture_the_Pi_Challenge_-_Wor…>
Wednesday 15th May
Department Of Computer Science - Lecture Theatre A
This week we have a guest company, Dionach <http://www.dionach.com/>,
coming in to do an interactive session with attendees. You will need to
bring your laptops with you for this event, and don't forget power
cables. People will also be grouped up into teams.
Teams will be challenged to exploit vulnerabilities that have been setup
on Raspberry Pis, in order to understand various types of software
vulnerabilities.
Dionach are an information security consultancy based in Oxfordshire
that specialize in penetration testing.

Hi Everyone,
Hope term has gone well for you all so far! It's been pretty hectic so
far for us CompSoc people. With 3 Geek Nights, a hackathon, and a film
night already done, and lots more to come, the best we to spend your
relaxation time this term definitely seems to be here!
This week we have our termly Games Night! So bring your laptops down to
the usual place at the usual time on Wednesday for many hours of LAN
Party goodness. The event this week is also sponsored by Rebellion Games
who have agreed to bring along some extra free games to play, along with
some funding for pizza of course.
We also have our usual Geek Night this Saturday, so come along down to
that if you feel like a relaxing evening with pizza and computer related
banter.
Games Night
<http://ox.compsoc.net/termcards/2013/trinity/Games_Night/>
Wednesday 8th May
Department Of Computer Science - Undergraduate Social Area
This event is sponsored by Rebellion Games <http://rebellion.co.uk/>,
who are providing us with some games to play for free! As always, pizza
and refreshments will be provided.
If you are having trouble getting into the building on the night, call
01865 283599.
If you plan on attending you will need to bring a laptop with any games
you want to play *installed and updated*!
You will also need a LAN cable and probably a power supply for your laptop.
Team Fortess 2 and Super Monday Night Combat are both free to install
and play from store.steampowered.com/
<http://store.steampowered.com/> (you have to install Steam first,
though). It is also possible to install TF2 from another computer with
it already installed on, we will probably be able to facilitate this but
should stress that it is a much better idea to *make sure it is
installed and up to date beforehand!* If there are any other games you'd
like to play (and think others will have) bring them along and we might
play them too!
