Hello Everyone!
There's a lot to cover in this newsletter, so I'll get straight into it!
*Firstly**:*
last week we had our Annual General Meeting, which saw our new 2013-2014
executive committee be elected. So now I would like to warmly welcome:
*President*, Joe Fowler (2nd Year CompSci)
*Secretary*, Maria Matescu (1st Year CompSci)
*Treasurer*, William Juan (3rd Year Maths & CompSci)
The new executive committee will begin taking the reigns over the coming
weeks and the easter holiday. At their discretion they will be able to
fill other committee roles later on, so if you are interested in other
committee positions, you know who to ask!
*
**Secondly**:*
Saturday saw our second annual paintballing match vs. Cambridge. There
were 6 rounds, and every single one was a draw! A definite improvement
of the completely unbalanced rounds of last year, but still lots of room
for improvement! Hopefully, if the trend continues, next year we'll be
able to completely pwn them! ;-)
*Thirdly:*
There are a couple of external events going on this week that you may be
interested in:
> Come along to Oxford e-Research Centre for a student forum about women
> in IT hosted by Teresa H. Carlson, VP Worldwide Public Sector, Amazon
> Web Services and Erika Erdos, Head of Public Sector Europe, Middle
> East and Africa with Amazon Web Services.
>
> The objective of the event is to give you a chance to:meet Teresa and
> Erika while they are in Oxford; talk about women in IT and the
> barriers they face; discuss the diversity agenda that so much of the
> IT industry is struggling to address.
>
> Monday 03 March 2014, 10:45-11:45, OERC conference room (room 278).
> All welcome.
>
> <http://talks.ox.ac.uk/talk/index/16915>
>
> Come along to Oxford Entrepreneurs' flagship weekend conference on
> the 8th-9th of March at the distinguished Said Business School. As
> well as the main conference, there will be themed networking dinners
> and a debate at the Oxford Union on 9th March at 8.00 PM
>
> oxfordinspires.com <http://oxfordinspires.com>
*Finally:*
And here are the official CompSoc events going on this week! We have
palantir giving a talk on wednesday, they will be providing some insight
into their company and a key bit of their software, it's not one to
miss! In addition, metaswitch will be joining us at geek night for a
casual chat.

Hello Everyone,
Sorry for the delayed newsletter.
To begin with, unfortunately the planned talk from Leng Lee (the COO of
Codecademy) has had to be cancelled.
However, this week, we still have an amazing talk lined up. Jon Skeet
(from Google, biggest contributor to Stack Overflow answers, ever) will
be coming yet again! This time to do a more tech-oriented talk.
And of course we have our usual Learn to Code and Geek Night events!
Google's Jon Skeet - Humanity: Epic Fail
<https://ox.compsoc.net/events/2014/hilary/google_talk/>
Date: Wednesday Week 4 - 12 February 2014 Time: 07:00 PM Facebook Event
<https://facebook.com/events/1445493415682020/>Place: Lecture Theatre A
- Dept. of Computer Science

<https://ox.compsoc.net/events/tags/sponsor_event/> Talk
<https://ox.compsoc.net/events/tags/talk/>
Jon Skeet will be joining us again to talk to the society this term,
this time on a bit of a more technical topic, with plenty of calendar
trivia.
*Abstract:*
When it comes down to it, all our data is just made of 1s and 0s. But
data in the real world is obviously much more complex than that, so we
impose extra meaning on top of it. We take it for granted that we can
represent numbers, text and date/time information in our programs...
indeed, these are three of the core building blocks which are used in
just about every data model imaginable.
So how is it that it's all so broken? Why is Stack Overflow full of
questions about arithmetic being 'broken' because of using float or
double? Is there any hope for things ever getting better?
In this talk, I'll give some examples of what's wrong with the world,
allocate blame to just about everyone involved, and give a few
suggestions to avoid getting burned. In all of this I'll be ably
assisted by my friend, Tony the Pony.

Hi Everyone,
Hope you all had a great break away from uni!
This week is going to be a bit of a quiet one, so we have decided to
host a film night, along with the usual learn to code events and geek
night (which is now members only, details of how to become a member can
be found here: https://ox.compsoc.net/join/)
Later on in term, we will be having Facebook, Google, Ensoft and
Entrepreneur First hosting events with us, other events are still to be
finalised. In the meantime, I hope to see you at the film night! =)

We're kicking off this term with a film night! We'll decide the film on
the night, so if you have any movies you think you'll be able to
persuade everyone to watch, bring them down!
There will of course be food as per usual

Hi Everyone!
Hope you have had a great festive holiday and new-years celebration! =)
King's College London Tech Society and King's College London Business
Club have kindly invited CompSoc and it's members to attend a Hackathon
that they are going to be running in cooperation with Codecademy.
> Students representing different societies from the best UK
> universities will be competing over 24 hours for various rewards,
> which include exclusive recruitment networking invitations, cash
> prizes and internship opportunities at our partner, Codecademy.
> See www.hackkings.org <http://www.hackkings.org/> for further information.
The event has limited places, so if you are interested, I suggest you
sign up ASAP! This looks like it is going to be an extraordinary event,
and a great opportunity to meet people from other techy societies and to
have good fun.
The event is free to attend, but the organisers have said we will need
to find our own way there. If there is enough interest from CompSoc
members, and enough sign up, we may be able to arrange something with
regards to travel. We'll announce anything regarding this when we can.
Please drop us a line if you sign up to this so we can keep a list of
who is attending.
Hope to see many of you there!
