Hello All, Unfortunately due to a clash with another event, the eth1 Hackathon has been cancelled. We hope to rearrange this sometime later this year, so stay tuned for further news. Hello All, Welcome back, we hope you enjoyed the vacation, and are ready for a new term packed full of computing events. We have loads of great events coming this term: The return of Learn to Code; Geek Nights; Tech Talks from some exciting companies; and even a 12 hour Hackathon (very soon, sign up now). More Information *Geek Nights* are a great chance to meet other geeks and discuss computing, technology, and just about any other topic you can imagine. They are nearly every week and open to all. We would love to see some new faces, so please do pop along. *Tech Talks* are hour long lectures on technical topic in the field of computing, that are accessible to anyone with an interest, but don't require any prior knowledge. They are both interesting, and a great chance to learn something new. *Learn to Code* will be running on Thursday evenings, from 19:30-21:30, in Room 379 of the Department of Computer Science, starting in Week 2. For the first few sessions, we will be covering programming in Python. How things proceed after that will depend on what there is interest for - the survey indicated a fair amount of interest in Java and Web Development, so depending on numbers and interest, we may do some sessions on those in later weeks. Sessions are aimed at complete beginners, so no prior experience is necessarily. Hello Everyone, On January 30th (Saturday of 2nd week) CompSoc will be hosting Jane Street and their hackathon *eth1*. Netcraft has discovered a large number of Android & IOS apps which do not implement SSL certificate validation correctly – allowing an attacker to carry out a ‘man-in-the-middle attack’, where they place themselves between the app and the real server. We will give a short tutorial outlining and illustrating the concept, followed by a hands-on competition to see who can MitM the apps used by the largest number of people in the time available. Beyond the handset, this evolution poses daunting technical challenges for the construction of the Internet infrastructure, and the complex software that brings the network itself to life. This talk is an accessible introduction to large-scale mobile networking today, from both real-world and computer science perspectives. Tues 27th Oct, 4:30pm Venue: Lecture Theatre B, Department of Experimental Psychology ******************** We are at the cusp of some far-reaching technological advances that will be of tremendous benefit to sensory research. Within a few short years we will be able to test thousands of people from any demographic with 'connected' technology every bit as good as we use in our labs today — indeed more so. Here, Dr Woods discusses on-web versus in-lab, predicted technological advances and issues with online research. Dr. Andy Woods received his PhD from Trinity College, Dublin, in Multisensory Psychology and have subsequently postdoc'd in Bangor (Wales) and later in Manchester (England). He also spent 4 years as a research scientist working for industry in the Netherlands (Unilever R&D). His research remains primarily focused in the field of multisensory psychology. For the past 6 years he has been developing the 'Xperiment' software package, which lets scientists conduct research interchangeably on the internet, on the phone/pad through Xperiment apps, or in the lab. ******************** Psychology and Neuroscience Applications Society The junction where psychology and neuroscience research meets action and innovation. Winners will be taken to London for the Global CodeCon Competition against the top performers in the United States. Competing universities are Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, St. Andrews, Edinburgh, Bristol and Southampton. Leaderboards will showcase the top performers as the competition progresses, to see a live update on who is taking the win. Food, beers, cool prizes, swag, and bragging rights will be had!
