Can computers prove theorems? talk with Professor Kevin Buzzard
[https://b6d43c23c6.imgdist.com/public/users/Integrators/BeeProAgency/975166…]
Speaker: Kevin Buzzard, professor of pure mathematics at Imperial College London
Abstract: Computers have been helping mathematicians for decades, by creating tables of examples of mathsy things. Much rarer are computer-assisted proofs, where computers finish the a proof of a theorem by doing a (typically huge) case check. But will advances in LLMs or interactive theorem provers mean that computers will soon start helping human mathematicians in new ways, or even doing maths themselves? I'll give a survey of the state of the art and suggest where we might be going.
After the talk join us in the UGSA for some free pizza and an opportunity to discuss the talk with others.

The Unfairness of Fair Machine Learning: Levelling down and strict egalitarianism by default with Brent Mittelstadt
[https://b6d43c23c6.imgdist.com/public/users/Integrators/BeeProAgency/975166…]
Speaker: Brent Mittelstadt
Abstract: In recent years fairness in machine learning (ML) has emerged as a highly active area of research and development. Most define fairness in simple terms, where fairness means reducing gaps in performance or outcomes between demographic groups while preserving as much of the accuracy of the original system as possible. This oversimplification of equality through fairness measures is troubling. Many current fairness measures suffer from both fairness and performance degradation, or "levelling down," where fairness is achieved by making every group worse off, or by bringing better performing groups down to the level of the worst off. When fairness can only be achieved by making everyone worse off in material or relational terms through injuries of stigma, loss of solidarity, unequal concern, and missed opportunities for substantive equality, something would appear to have gone wrong in translating the vague concept of 'fairness' into practice. In this talk I will examine the causes and prevalence of levelling down across fairML, and explore possible justifications and criticisms based on philosophical and legal theories of equality and distributive justice, as well as equality law jurisprudence. FairML does not currently engage in the type of measurement, reporting, or analysis necessary to justify levelling down in practice. I will propose a first step towards substantive equality in fairML: "levelling up" systems by design through enforcement of minimum acceptable harm thresholds, or "minimum rate constraints," as fairness constraints. I will likewise propose an alternative harms-based framework to counter the oversimplified egalitarian framing currently dominant in the field and push future discussion more towards substantive equality opportunities and away from strict egalitarianism by default.

Opportunity To Help Oxford SU’s New Mastodon Instance, ox.social, Federated Social Media
[https://b6d43c23c6.imgdist.com/public/users/Integrators/BeeProAgency/975166…]
Message from ox social:
ox.social<https://ox.social/> is a new Oxford SU student project, establishing our own federated and decentralised social media instance<https://fediverse.info/>, running the popular twitter-alternative FOSS, called ‘Mastodon<https://joinmastodon.org/>’. This service would provide an alternative to current social media, only reluctantly used by Oxford students, by creating an online space for discussion, promotion of events, and of course for looking at Oxfess. But the project needs your help! Anyone with experience in web hosting or development (especially with Ruby on Rails, Node.js, React.js, or Redux), please get in touch at hello(a)ox.social<mailto:hello@ox.social>.

The Logical Route to the Turing Machine: What inspired Alan Turing to Invent Computer Science?
Turing’s 1936 paper was a landmark in the history of computer science - but how exactly did it come about? In this talk, we will discuss the philosophical origins of the Turing machine and the paradox that inspired it.
Speaker Bio:
Peter Millican originally studied Mathematics at Oxford, but graduated in Philosophy and Theology before moving into postgraduate study in Philosophy (also at Oxford). After a brief spell lecturing in Philosophy of Religion at Glasgow, from 1985 until 2005 he lectured in Computer Science and Philosophy at Leeds University, where much of his work was devoted to building interdisciplinary links. In 2005 he became Gilbert Ryle Fellow at Hertford College, then Reader in Early Modern Philosophy in 2007, and Professor of Philosophy in 2010.

Jane Street: One log to rule them all - How to keep state straight in distributed systems
[https://b6d43c23c6.imgdist.com/public/users/Integrators/BeeProAgency/975166…]
At Jane Street<https://www.janestreet.com/>, we rely heavily on inter-process communication and real-time message passing to drive many of our most critical systems, including those that ingest marketdata and implement trading strategies. As we scale up the number of components, however, it becomes increasingly difficult to reason about the consistency and correctness of the overall system.
In this talk, we explore how transaction logs, state machine replication, and control flow inversion have allowed us to structure our applications in a way that lets us reliably deal with data races and process failures. We introduce Aria, a low-latency framework built on top of these ideas that has helped Jane Street scale our trading infrastructure while making it more performant, testable, and robust.
After the talk join us for Pizza and networking with Pedro and a Jane Street recruiter.
Sign up here<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeP9In88lQDg-SPeZjXTbU4WGzwefVul9w…> by 5pm on Tuesday 24th October. We will send a confirmation email with event details on Wednesday 25th October.
