Trinity Term Week 8 Newsletter-ish
Sudden Surprise Shock Pizza Night
Hola, Battle-Hardened Veteran,
Welcome… to… Week 8? It may be Friday, but it’s never too late for your weekly CompSoc newsletter. We have in store for you today a surprise pizza night to end off the term before some amongst us begin the arduous task of travelling away, along with a sponsor opportunity below.
We’re down in the Undergraduate Social Area tonight at 7:30pm! As ever we’ll fulfil your every dietary need with ample pizza and ice cream. Come on down to hang out with friends one last time before the lights are switched off and we all go home for the year.
— Declan, CompSoc Secretary
Fun Computing Fact: You’ve probably heard of reduced instruction set computers and complex instruction set computers, but you may not have heard of ultimatereduced instruction set computers! Also known as one-instruction set computers, these refer to computers with instruction sets containing a single instruction. These can be Turing complete and massively simplify instruction encodings by eliminating the need for opcodes, but for the most part aren’t particularly useful.

Trinity Term Week 7 Newsletter
Termly General Meeting!
Hello, Kindly Traveller,
Welcome to Seventh Week... okay, it's a bit late in the week to say that. Apologies. As the elders amongst us hurtle towards the ever-wonderful end of exams and the freshers prepare for the turbid waters of prelims, my job is but to inform you of our final major event of Trinity Term — the Termly General Meeting!
Held every term, the TGM is your chance to influence CompSoc's policies, by-laws and regulations. Any member can submit a motion for consideration — all you have to do is join our Discord server. If the tedium of bureaucracy doesn't interest you, we'll end the term as we started after with pizza and board games. Details are below.
— Declan, CompSoc Secretary
Fun Computing Fact: If you sat the Computer Architecture exam this week, you're probably (hopefully) familiar with Intel's x86 instruction set — it's the one used in all your desktop processors. What you probably don't know is that the architecture is so complex that even the simple mov instruction is Turing complete! With some clever usage of addressing modes and processor faults, the M/o/Vfuscator project can compile C code to binaries using only mov. You can even compile (a very slow version of) Doom!
Still not a member? How?! Membership only costs £1 for LIFE, with tons of benefits - discounts on merch and tickets, free food at all socials, our exclusive Discord server and more - so it's definitely worth signing up!

It's almost the end of the term, and it's time for us to consider your suggestions for the future of CompSoc! Come along to our Termly General Meeting this Saturday, where all members can vote on your motions! You'll also hear from our Committee members on what they've been doing this term and what we plan to do for the future.
After all that tiresome bureaucracy, we'll close out the term in true CompSoc style with pizza and board games. Make sure to come along to catch up with friends and relax for one last time before the end of the academic year!
If you'd like to submit your own motions, you'll have to be a member! Motions can be submitted in our Discord server, which you can join with the following link: https://discord.com/invite/cUZFPG5WZ6. Please submit all motions by 11:59 pmon Friday 7th June.
Please note that the TGM is at 7pm. Not 8pm. Don't believe the lies of the termcard.

Problem Sheet and Panic!
Bonjour and Bienvenue, Benefactor,
Welcome to Fifth Week! As we continue to rumble on right through the half-way point of the term, we have a quieter week in store for you after last week's double whammy of fun drinks events.
Are you cautiously eyeing your looming exam timetable? Come on down to the Undergraduate Social Area for Problem Sheet and Panic 2: Electric Boogaloo this Saturday! We'll help you beat the pangs of procrastination and get through that workload with the classic CompSoc combination of snacks and pizza1.
Finally, as we don't have any events planned for next week, we want to hear about cool things you're working on for next week's newsletter! If you have something you've made that you'd like to see showcased, feel free to email me or reach out through Discord, and we may well include it in our next issue!
— Declan, CompSoc Secretary
1 And maybe some ice cream like last time? You'll have to come along to find out...
Fun Computing Fact: Let's return once more to the theme of semaphores and telegraphs from last week; did you know the first cyberattack actually happened in France all the way back in 1834? Back then, the French telegraph system was used to speed up the transmission of the latest financial data. However, it still wasn't fast — the data took three days to send! Brothers François and Joseph Blanc took advantage of this by bribing operators between the terminus points of Bordeaux and Paris to reveal the information early through secret details hidden in normal-looking messages, and thus effectively play the market to their advantage.

Fun Computing Fact: If I say the word 'semaphore', what comes to mind? A neat little concurrency primitive? Well, today's fun fact concerns the rather older type of semaphore — the ones where moving physical parts are used as long-distance visual signals. If you think that's a horribly antiquated technology with no use in the modern world besides railways... well, you'd be right, but that didn't stop the Internet Engineering Task Force from writing RFC 4824<https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc4824> in 2007. Otherwise known as the Semaphore Flag Signalling System, RFC 4824 describes a proposed method to transmit Internet Protocol (IP) packets over semaphore. Somehow, I'm not sure it'll catch on...

Post Office Talk and Saturday Social!
Welcome Back, Old Friend,
The time just keeps rolling on by... welcome to Third Week! As your loyal envoy, it is my privilege to tell you about the two fun events we have planned for you this week.
First, some quick amendments to the termcard; the Jazz Night and Junkyard Golf events planned for this week will unfortunately not be able to go ahead. But let's pretend that didn't happen and move swiftly on to what we have planned instead...
Tomorrow, we have an exciting talk brought to you by two former CompSoc members! David North and Stephen White from CoreFiling will be appearing to give a talk on what the IT industry can learn from the now infamous scandal surrounding the Post Office's Horizon IT system.
On Saturday, we're back down in the UGSA once more for our Saturday Problem Sheet and Panic social! Come along and enjoy plenty of free CompSoc-funded snacks... and, of course, your weekly hit of pizza. Details, as always, are below.
- Declan, CompSoc Secretary
Fun Computing Fact: When the iPod debuted in 2001, it changed the way we listen to music forever. When the iPhone showed up on the scene in 2007, it happened again for our phone calls. But did you know how close we came to neither of these products existing? In the mid-90s, Apple faced dire financial issues while searching desperately for a successor to the aging Mac OS 7. Numerous contenders were named - including Windows NT! Be Inc's BeOS was a strong option, but it wasn't to Be™. Instead, Apple decided to rehire the previouly fired Steve Jobs by acquiring his NeXT company, which developed the NeXTSTEP operating system - NeXTSTEP became Mac OS X and Steve Jobs launched the iMac, revitalising the company and allowing it to make the iPod. The rest is history!

This talk is not being held in the Department of Computer Science. Do not go to the Department of Computer Science. You will look silly and you will feel silly.

Trinity Term Week 2 Newsletter
Drinks Night, MathsSoc Social and More!
Salutations, Valued Customer,
Whew! It's Second Week already? How the time flies... anyway, we're back again with some new events through the week, along with the announcement of a talk for next week!
After the return of our Competitive Programming Mashup Contest earlier today, we have a fun drinks event planned for Thursday! We'll be down at the Oxo Bar with a huge drinks tab! If you're interested in a spot of socialising while drinking as your heart desires on our budget, read the details down below!
On Saturday, it'll be time to break with CompSci tradition and venture out in daylight hours for our social with the Oxford University Mathematics Society! We'll be hanging out at Taylors for a relaxed afternoon social.
Finally, we can announce a new talk with former CompSoc members! David North and Stephen White from CoreFiling will be dropping by to give a talk on what the IT industry can learn from the widely publicised scandal surrounding the Post Office's Horizon IT system next week. Check out the details below!
- Declan, CompSoc Secretary
Fun Computing Fact: If you've ever watched Jurassic Park, you may remember that one dramatic scene towards the end<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOeY07qKU9c> where the girl exclaims 'it's a Unix system!' and instantly understands how to navigate through the weird 3D representation of the park's files. Funnily enough, that outlandish Hollywood-esque 3D file viewer is real - it's called fsn, and was written for Silicon Graphics' IRIX operating system (which, yes, was a Unix system). You can even run it today! A port to Linux and other modern Unix-like systems called fsv (File System Visualiser) is available to install online, so now you too can slowly zoom through your files like you're under raptor attack in 1993.
Still not a member? How?! Membership only costs £1 for LIFE, with tons of benefits - discounts on merch and tickets, free food at all socials, our exclusive Discord server and more - so it's definitely worth signing up!

Check Out OxWoCS!
Make sure to join OxWoCS (Oxford Women in CS), a society we're working closely with, if you identify as a woman or woman-adjacent person in CS! They have a host of wonderful events on, including talks, panels and socials. Computer Science is unfortunately a subject with one of the biggest gender gaps in Oxford and worldwide, and addressing this is at the core of OxWoCS.
